This year I will be growing:

Cherry tomatoes
Potatoes
Strawberrys
Rasberrys
Runner beans
Basil
Other herbs
Whatever I get from the free seeds people.

The cherry tomatoes I will grow from seed from a store bought tomatoe. I will just split it open and dry the seeds out on kitchen paper before sowing in march. I have a small lean to greenhouse which will house these once its no longer needed for seedlings

I will mostly be growing seed potatoes allthough I have put 2 to chit just out of my kitchen cupboard as an experiment.

Sending off for free strawberrys from a well known gardening magazine to plant in a container

2 years ago I accidently prunned ALL my raspberry canes (not just the ones which fruited) so last year I didnt get any fruit but LOTS of canes. This year I should get lots of raspberrys hopefully enough to make jam

runnerbeans I will buy seeds and plant end of may

Basil I grew last year and collected the seeds so will try to germinate in march on a windowsill. Gonna try nippin off the growing tips to get a bushier plant this time

More herbs not decided what yet

And some freebies from a thread on here.

I've just done some research on drying tomato seeds and some people seem to think its worth "fermenting" the seeds for a few days in a jar (to mimic the natural process of the fruit rotting) and then rinsing and drying the seeds. So I've put the seeds out of two cherry tomatos ironically into an old ketchup bottle:

Hi wakenbake, have you done this before?

I recently done the same, however after 3-4 days fermening, I removed the seeds they had 'plastic' looking seal around them, is this normal?

Anyways, they stuck to the plate when drying, so I just binned them. Am doing a second try now, any advice please?

Heya , stick um on a bit of paper/lining paper let um dry there then cut them out plant with the paper also , the mimic the natural process of the fruit rotting is provably the plants process of breaking down the chemical restrictors , i use water smile.gif

Interesting. When do the strawberries get planted? Do they need a greenhouse?

I've never really grown anything other than green. This year I want to start playing with bonsia trees, cherry trees, strawberries and pear trees. I like fruit lol.gif

No not tried this before, but from what I've read

"you can generally tell the fermentation is complete when the seeds settle to the bottom of the jar in a watery liquid and the thicker pulp and mold sit on top of them."

Then you remove the mould and rinse well.

Then spread over a plate to dry and shake daily. dont speed the process by using heat.

So I'll just wait and post results on here.

I'll have to get back to you on planting strawberry Blayzed! never grown them before

So they just need a good long rinse and drying, putting them in a jar to ferment isn't necessary? Theyve been in for 6 days now but dont seem redy yet. Hmm g.gif

Ive got a load of garden chores to be doing at the moment like treating the fences, cleaning the greenhouse and tidying the shed. Role on spring when the fun begins. Im also thinking of building a small raised bed in a boggy area, improve the drainage and put the runner beans in along there.

What are you guys doing in the garden at the moment?

Hi man, thanks for the info thumbsup.gif

Well, my seeds were sucessful (hopefully), they sunk after 4 days and they dried up nicely on the plate, though some did stick to it (I imagine these will be damaged, but who knows, the rest were great though, kept moving them around like you said smile.gif )

I heard you should not ferment too long, I'm pretty sure I read no more than 96hrs fermenting)

Will try germinating them soon biggrin.gif
wakenbaker
Whoops mine have been fermenting for 6 days! Better dry em out. If this method doesnt work I'll buy a pack of seeds cuz i got my heart set on cherry toms. rofl.gif

Nice one smokey, that gives me hope, I think I'll get mine going tommorow. Are you growing anything else this year?

Wakenbake
wakenbaker
Cherry Tomatoes seeds have been sown today! Will post some pics when/if they germinate.
wakenbaker
I'm thinking of doing a guerrilla grow of fruit N veg next year. Im growing some stuff this year in my garden http://www.uk420.com/boards/index.php?showtopic=160615
but am limited due to space. Seeing as you cant get an allotment these days for love nor money it could be the answer. You know those sites you find but decide its too risky to grow cannabis on? Thinking of maybe some fruit trees like pears, or some roots like potatoes, onions, carrots. What do you guys think?

Wakenbaker.

There is a good website the Hugh F-W is involved in. I hope jules and other mods wont mind me posting the link here? landshare

Top idea that mate. Go for it.

Just tomtoms by the look of it mate, i planned to grow onions and garlic but its a bit late for that, will prepare the ground this year for next year biggrin.gif

I'll be growing toms outdoors and in a greenhouse, along with that funny lookin hemp in gh wink.gif

Forgot to say, gotta watch the wildlife with some fruits. So make sure you don't forget some protection from animals man. Like nets over cherry trees to stop the birds etc.

My Basil's Germinated in 48hrs applause.gif toot.gif thumbsupsmileyanim.gif Well happy as there my own collected seeds and not kept in the best conditions excl.gif Can only see the little white shoots through a lense so no photos yet.

Never tried growing basil from seed, well done WB.
The quick/lazy way to establish a herb garden is to buy pots of living herbs from a supermarket and plant them out.
Herbs like rosemary will root from a cutting, it takes a while but one stem will soon turn into a 4ft bush.
Mine came from the supermarket, just prepacked cut stems in a plastic bag...no plant involved
Its all good fun wink.gif
wakenbaker
I've got SPRING fever excl.gif

Today I bought some Fuhsias

Nice one, my strawberrys are sitting in the greenhouse untill I get me a strawberry planter. I'm busy edging the lawn at the moment it makes it look so neat (which is strange as one look at my room/desk/car/clothes/hair would not lead you to think I'm not a neat person rofl.gif )
Potatoes still chitting on the kitched windowsill.
Fuchias and geraniums all topped
Cherry tomatoes potted up.
Some basil potted up
Roses all prunned.

Im knackered wheelchair.gif

Hi Wakenbaker,

Just to answer your question first, you can't take cuttings from Basil, it's too soft in it's structure and would rot before rooting, they are fairly easy to grow from seed but do require a lot of warmth and Sun it's also a good idea to pinch them out to produce a more bushy plant.

Smokey,

It's not to late to plant Onion sets but Garlic would struggle, you could try though, just buy a good looking plump fresh bulb split it and plant blunt end down.

Heres a picture of my little heated propergator, the Basil was sown on the 1st of March, same as you I think Wakenbaker theres also 2 different sorts of Tom's the bush one was free with the GW mag and some lettuce and Chilli seedlings.

Cheers man thumbsup.gif My garlic are already growing guitar.gif

2 weeks ago I plant 15 + garlic sets) and they are 3" above surface now, worth a go i suppose.

How and when to feed garlic? I've just given a bit of water as the compost started to dry up around the sides.

Will be getting some onion sets this week, patch good to go, lovely 1ft of soft soil smoke.gif

My Basil went in on 28th Feb and your kicking my ass!

I think its a tad early for Basil so yours are benefiting from the heated propigator while mine are struggling.

Wakenbaker,

Your window growing picture reminded me of when I first got the growing bug about 20 years ago, if it's any use, what I did was screw the metal shelving slotty things on the window frame and filled the window with shelves, you could do the same with a bookcase or similar, it gives the plants a bit more light.

Smokey,

No need to feed Garlic it's a long term crop and will find what it wants from the soil, if you've transplanted it from pots of compost just make sure the soil is moist all the time untill the bulbs get some roots down.

Thanks again mate

They were planted directly into a bed (toy box cut in half)

Noticed today the compost was coming away from the sides ie drying up, so I was right then to give em a splash of water.

Will keep doing that thumbsup.gif

Heya wakenbaker , good plan as a preventative , youres seedlings look fine btw .
ps , just scrape/disturb the mould to disperse it on the top , there not damping off .

I think My basil is deffinatley damping off poor gerination rates, young seedlings fell over and died, older seedlings getting stem rot Click to view attachment

The rest of my plants I think will be okay but I'd better get some cheshunt compound and do a bit of repotting. Anyone else had problems with white mould?
