same as with a spade and fork, hitting a stone with a good swing from the spade isn't pleasant and it sounds like a gun going off. at least with the auger you can use the turning motion to turn the soil rather than slicling lumps up with the spade and trying to fork it overQUOTE

good point but at least you can turn over round them. i suppose with a powered auger it wood be a problem but a hand powered one you have control. i'm a spade and fork man myself but i have used a hand auger and they are fine tools
