With you being somewhat further north you may need a small glasshouse or polytunnel to do well with some vars. But gardeners delight, a small tom about 1 inch in diameter should grow ok, it has such thin skin it will split if you knock it but bursts with flavour. I get a hundred or more per plant.

If you have a south facing wall that you could grow tom’s against, you could do much better.

wink.gif Wow, thanks man, that's great.
Our new garden, when we get there, has many opportunities. It also gets invaded by two goats, a pony and a family of peacocks!!! So I am thinking about a small greenhouse and/or a polytunnel.
But then I may be able to talk the farmer/landlord into letting me use a little bit of unused land for them?? We'll see......

A L. You have plenty of time you don’t need to sow seed until round March time.

I’m happy to write up a few growing guidline for you and yours when they are needed if you want.

Sorry to jump on the thread like this,

It's now the end of the tom season. Well, it is in our garden as the sun barely reaches the plants anymore sad.gif So I was thinking of shoving a couple of the plants in the currently empty grow room. They are bushy, unsupported plum toms - any idea of what sort of lighting hours I should be giving them? It would be a shame to lose them as the most of the plants have a dozen or so green/orange fruits just waiting to turn.....

DL as long as your plants are healthy I would leave them be. Its going to stay warm for a while yet.

As soon as any real night cold is forecast, pick all the fruit so they keep their calyx and lay them in mushroom trays so they don’t touch one another then bring them into a warm room. Its heat that ripens tomatoes not light. Most will ripen over the following weeks, any that are very immature can be made into green tomato chutney.

Mushroom trays! You can get them from greengrocers who sell their their mushroom loose. They just chuck them away. They can stack up to at least 10 trays high. Are also very good for drying trim and small buds.

I don’t advise bringing plants from the outside into the grow room, you will almost certainly bring at least thrips in and believe me you don’t want do do that.

My mate just fixed my camera for me. A pic of some of the vars I'v mentioned.
