My brother and I decided that since we have had major bad luck this past summer for outdoor growing, we would try our hand at indoor growing. So we chose a location in the earth part of his basement and everything went from there.
The basement was divided by a half wall with pillars every 4 foot or so. So we busted out one of the half walls in the center of the wall and decided to wall it up and put in a hidden door in this area. Between the pillars here it is about 6 feet or so.
I initially wanted to put in a sconce light and use it to unlock the door to allow it to open, but I just could not get it to work without fabricating some sort of metal pieces that would allow the sconce to turn without binding against the door, and pull two cables/chains and compress the two springs in the locks. So I changed it up some and we have a functioning lock and it is all hidden. We have had people in the basement since who never asked twice about the wall and door.

The full basement is half earth, half concrete divided by a half wall and pillars. The concrete side is mainly storage, allonf with an area for washer and dryer and an area for dog grooming and outdoor gardening and what not.

From the point of the last pic, it took me a little while to get a door on the grow box, and to figure an actual locking system for the main hidden door. I did not want to go with a locking system that could be accessed from the outside of the doot such as how I settled on being able to pull the chain from outside, but as it sits right now, thats about the only way I can do it. I want to get a nice magnetic lock to put on the door so it can be opened electronically, and no one would be able to find the way in.

Two post back.... there is a pic of shelves.... there are in front of the half wall, I had to go behind them and board them all up so no one could see into the earth are of the basement.
In the below pix... the area where the stack of bricks are at is where I intend on building a veg box with 6 4 foot floros in it. I havent started on it, but thats why I took the pic.

This is the duel thermometer with duel probes. I have one probe on the top of the soil to get a temp reading there, and the other is in a seedling, but will go into the veg box once it gets built.

, well.... I havent gotten them into bloom yet. I believe they are ready....... But not quite there. I have to build a veg box and a mom box. I dont think you can quite see it in the pix but there is a BW seedling nestled in around the others
that needs to get into a box of her (hoping) own before turning the others to flower. I have them on 20/4 right now.... And I am experiencing allot of heat and humidity since i installed the sealed door. I have to figure out a good venting system for the box before committing to bloom. Also... (back onto topic I guess) I installed the light fixture so i could have an outlet in there for the fans, and figured that since it was there I would put in a green bulb so if the occasion ever arose where we needed to get in there during the 12 off cycle, we could without turning on the regulare lights outside the box. Right now, where they are, the dark period is during the day so the cold of winter doesnt hurt them as it could at night. I was thinking ahead that if the dark cycle is during the day during bloom, we would need to open her up to water and what not.

Yes, Once it gets to working right, and whats growing in there now (bag seed) is harvested we are going to paint it flat white and go from there. I just happened to have the thermal blanket tarp that I used as a door so instead of just tossing it to the side, I figured I would go ahead and put it on the inside of the door for now. When we paint, the inside of the door and the box will all be white.

My brother has a roommate....

I know, I know.... never grow in such a situation.... the roommate is trusted, my brother and the roommate have known eachother for years and bla bla bla... the roommate does not know about the grow, though if he did, he would be totally fine with it.... the excuse that has been used for the construction is that it is my room.... I closed off the opening, and for a good while he didnt know it was a door... then he came down to the basement one night to do laundry and the door was wide open while I was still constructing the box and was like "wow" but I kept him out of it, and told him it was my private room for my "private" play time with special friends.... I was building a gimp box and if he asked any more questions he would be the first one to occupy it.....
So... due to this issue of a roommate, I want to add an alarm to the upstairs kitchen door that allows entry to the garage that allows entry to the basement. When the kitchen door opens up, I want it to alert me or my brother when we are in the back area that someone is coming down....
I have looked at a few 12 volt buzzers at Radio Shack (does the UK have Radio Shack?) and thinking of combining it with a door tag.... What cha think?

I havent added the buzzer yet, but I have added a vent system to vent it outdoors. I was originally thinking of doing 8inch out and 6 inch in, then realized that were I cut the 8 inch hole, I would not be able to add the vent duct because of the household ducting was in the way. So I opted to close that hole, move the hold over and use all 6 inch. I found a nice 250cfm inline duct fan that I added to it along with a thermal switch that shuts off the fan if the temp gets too low....
It has helped with keeping the humidity in the 60s with the door closed and sealed. The humidity was getting into the high 70s and 80s before I put in the venting system.

Well, now that you ask.... the original idea was to do a lowered bed into the earth. But we had the issue of water run off when it rained and until that was fixed, I didnt feel it would be good to plant in the red clay soil. Once the spring comes and I am able to dig out the area that is allowing the water to run in, and get it fixed I will probably rebuild the box to both make it larger and to use the earth as a bed to allow the plants to grow larger.
