Hi fellow tokers,

Quite often threads pop up requesting information on Hotels and places to stay in Amsterdam, thought it would be easier for all to just create one thread which can be updated everybody over a period of time,

My 1st review is for the Centrum Hotel

Address - WARMOESSTRAAT 15 - 1012 HT AMSTERDAM - THE NETHERLANDS
(opposite Hunters Coffeeshop and Hill Street Blues – 5minute walk from Central Station)

Contact Details - TEL: + 31 20 624 35 35 - FAX: + 31 20 420 16 66

Prices – Single room 45Euros per night (pretty sure all singles have shared bathroom)
Double from 60-80 Euros per room per night.
Triple 80Euro (all shared bathrooms)
2 Bunk Bed standard (shared Bathroom) 115Euro per room per night.

I stayed at the centrum for 2 nights in June this year, was very happy with the place. Room was pretty small but clean and tidy with a nice sized bathroom, managed to talk the owner down to 75euro per night, she was originally asking for 90. The only problem with the room was we were on the 5th floor and no lift, and those stairs in dam are not designed for stoned tourists, beware!

1 negative is they knew nothing of my booking when I arrived, seems the guy that took the message didn't put it in the book, luckily there was a spare room this time.

The Centrum also has a nice comfortable bar downstairs that supposidly has the cheapest beer prices in dam, its also smoker friendly.

The hotel also has no curfew although I was a little concerned to find when i returned on sunday night at about 1am they were actually closing the bar so if I had been 30 minutes later I probably wouldn't of been able to get it.

Overall I would defiainly recommend the Centrum, it certainly ain't the Ritz but is defiaintly good value for money.
P.S Mods - Could we pin this thread please.
EDIT: I stayed here again in September due to the Greenhouse Effect being full, this time it wasn't such an enjoyable visit. We stayed a Thurs and Friday night, i think we paid 70euro for a twin room for Thurs and 90euros for Friday.

Room was small but comfortable enough, I was a bit disappointed to find you couldn't close the window, especially when I realised the hotel was having work done on its roof, which happened to be right outside my window. So for both morning we were awoke at 7am by 10-20 workmen using power tools no futher than 20 foot from my window. Luckily I was stonned enough to get some sleep!

SB

hahahhahaahaha ill beware of 5ifth flor stairs and 7am workers that suxs planing ti visit˝DAM˝ by the end of this year if not busted till then, hope not, enyway tnx for recomended places to stay see ya. H

I second that - stayed their a few years back - it sucks. Almost as bad as the Hotel Neutraal a few doors up dam rak, and that place really sucked - £20 a night at the time but it wasnt even worth half that, I'd rather have slept in one of the open-air pissers they have scattered throughout the dam.

The bulldog gets a lot of bad press on here and rightfully so. Thier coffeeshops are shite. But thier hotel i'd recomend very highly. Smack bang in the middle of the red lights (i love the sleazy atmos round there!), good value with clean rooms, friendly staff, 24 hour smoking lounge with bar, pool table, fusball, vending machines, big comfy couches and even a DVD player if thats your thing. Great location too, pretty much five minutes from everywhere.

I've tried very hard to look but having no success finding a hotel on/next to Haarlemmerstraat.

Anyone know a site that could help?

Not too sure about that FM. One thing I do know is DO NOT USE 'EASYTOBOOK.COM'.

Sorry for shouting, but last year I booked a room with them which turned out to have been double booked. Stranded with a 1,3 and 5 year old I was anything but pleased, but I thought hey it happens and just got on with it.

On my return home though I found that the cheeky sods had still charged me for the room. Well, nearly a year on and I still haven't been refunded. Easytobook say they aren't able refund the money as they are just an agent and don't do anything with your card details but pass them on to the hotel. I've sent them e-mails from me to the hotel and they have said on numerous occasions they would seek an explanation from the hotel for me but I'm just being fobbed off by them as well.

So, please do not use EASYTOBOOK.COM.

Cheers

Just another review to add wink1.gif

I stayed at the Rookies hotel for a couple of nights in early June, it was 90euros per night for a twin room.

Room was small but very clean and tidy, on the 3rd floor with some very steep ctairs to climb but nothing to bad. People running the hotel were very helpful and as you would expect smoker friendly wink1.gif

Breakfast was served over the road in the Rookies resturant, very small and basic and not buffet style, the only hot choice was scrambled eggs. Still they do good juice, tea and coffee and you can have a smoke so can't comlpain really.

One bad point is the weed they sell in the Coffeeshop is total crap, and I have that view from various times i've visited over the years, The Mako Haze I bought was one of the worst smokes of the trip, the High, Romulan and Northern Lights wasnt much better.

In fact there arnt any decent Coffeeshops directly on or off the Leidelsplein so it's worth the short walk to the Noon or a 10min stroll to de Dampring thumbsup.gif

Stayed at 'La Boheme' back in January with my buddy who is an artfreak. It's sweetly positioned if you wanna visit the art galleries and photo exhibs. They're a cool bunch of people, their rooms are basic but clean, and there is a very tasty italian restaurant next door for when you want top notch nosh but are too caned to walk very far. Highly recommended.

Just got back from the Dam.

Stayed in the GreenHouse effect hotel for 3 nights (market & city oasis - both appartments)

Really impressed - stunning location (overlooking nieue markt square/waag castle) - discounted beer and bud at the greenhouse too.

Thought staff were very friendly but the best thing was the room - excellent value for money if there's a few of ypu and you can book ahead (like 3 months.) Spent a couple of nights (from around 10pm to 4am) sat in the window watching the world go by. Highly recommended...

so quick situation report while i'm here:

NYCD from both Greenhouse & Grey Area - great as ever

amnesia - greenhouse & somewhere else - devastating

Waterworks (was moonshine) from Dampkring - great (but overpriced)

Nederhash crystal/skuff from Grey area - great as ever

De Kuil - still great despite losing the alcohol license...

But there are just too many nutters now in the red light area - just a mass of pissed up kids/blokes drinking and shouting.

yeah, really busy and how hot was it!?!

me n my mates wanna go back but at not such a busy time.

Bubblegum from the Grasshopper was my fave.

I stayed In the Budget Hotel Tourist Inn - great location, 5 min walk from everything really. Abraxas coffeshop right across the road and the doors palace just a few doors down. Although the woman behind the bar in the doors palace wasnt very friendly when we asked for the menu and she said maybe in a few hours.

The room was basic but clean, window with a good view of some ladies of the night right below us 13.gif Got really hot at night but i think thats just to do with the insanely good weather they're having (maybe i'm just to used to our crap weather over here)

Hotel ROH

Very central [20m off Dam Sq]

Very quiet [like, unbelievably...]

Nice ppl .... even by Dutch standards !

Buffet breakfast and with nice times, serves till 10.30 IIRC, really chilled, totally unique place, piece of p1$$ to find, even when you are rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrocking, slightly more expensive than some but really worth paying for.

Fuck that's who I've booked with, did they take your money or just a deposit? i thought you just paid the hotel in cah when you got there? that's how it usually works. they better not fuck around. what hotel did you book?

I have twice (and just booked a third time for Dec 14th for Greenhouse Effect) used www.booking.com a really useful site, they just take credit card details to secure room and you pay how you like direct to hotel and you can cancel up to two days before. Never had a problem with them and you can really check out your hotel and have guest reviews !!

Well I've been and gone and my booking was fine except they charged more when I got there than was said on the site! Either that or i missed a charge in the smallprint.

The hotel was 'Fantasia' which had really good reviews but the room we had was terrible. It was a converted loft and so small you had to dogde eachother to get past and the bathroom(which stunk of piss) was stupidly small, i bashed my head on the low ceiling several times! The steps were a bitch to climb(76 of them) and the place was just generally shit. Maybe the other rooms are a nicer. Breakfast was a pile of cack as well, it was stale and the owner just stood there watching over you making you feel awkward.
The cleaners move all your shit around and make you think they've had a peek and maybe more.
It was too far away from eveything too! Do yourselves a favour and give it a miss!

Owl Hotel

stayed here last week in a single room on my own and it was really nice well friendly staff clean nice bathroom. nothing more i could have asked for. I t wasnt really cheap but not expensive either (guess it depends on your situation huh)

think it was 80 euro a night but was well worth it. was a 3 star.

near vondelpark so away from all the pissed up scumbags of red light area.

nearby coffeeshops that were good

tweede karmer (10 minute walk) very nice menu
amnesia 15 minute walk nice atmosphere comfy seats and good products

dolphins 5 minute walk - shit menu but nice vibe and free wireless internet
rokery 5 minute walk quite busy seemed alright but not as quality stuff as the 2 above.

loads of cheap italian resteraunts with 5 euro menus in the area too.

hope this helps someone.

ps. if you want to treat the missus went last year n stayed in park plaza i think it was called can get deals on rooms its 4 star and well posh nice views with little balconys nice for tooting on.

I found it a great day out. john lennon airport 6am, arrive in dam central 9.30. leave dam central 8.20pm, i'm back in my house by 10.45 pm. 3 years since i last went, the whole journey both ways £50..easyjet.
rubixs
when i went to the dam in feb it was an all inclusive package 130 quid.
that was being picked up in town(birmingham),upto hull onto ferry.
stayed on ferry for 1 night got to the dam about 10 o'clock in the morning, meet back at coach to go to our hotel at 3pm.
but the hotel was miles away from amsterdam town,we missed coach back to hotel on the night & had to pay 25 euros in a taxi to get back to hotel.
spent all the next day in the town,10pm back on coach for return journey.
it was a good package but did'nt like where our hotel was.
next time i go hopefully soon i'm just gonna do what i do when i go to blackpool, just get there may be have a smoke first then look around for digs in the town or near by.

Whenever I go to the Dam (about twice a year) I always use a place called Frederics accomodations, Unsure if I am allowed to post this link but here goes (sorry mods if not allowed) unsure.gif here >>> Frederic I have always found his places reasonable for the money, and are always very clean. His places are independant accomodations throughout Amsterdam, meaning you have your own keys to your own houseboat or apartment (which it totally private) and you can come and go as you please. The best part about it is there is no deposit to be left on the accomodation, just the price for the rental itself, also the fact that there is no cerfew and most of his places are toker friendly which suits me perfectly. I have found his places cheaper and more convienient than hotels and have always found his service very good, he will also rent you a typical 'Dutch' style bike for a very reasonable price indeed.
I hope someone finds this information useful.

Hotel Kooyk

Was about 50 Euro's a night for me and the girlfriend. Nice friendly staff. Our room was really nice as it had big opening french doors going into what seemed like our own private garden. There was also a lovely hotel dog that you could play with if ya got a bit bored whilst having a joint in the garden.

Unfortunately we had ants in our room but as soon as we mentioned it to them they got us 2 different types of insect spray immediately.

It was at the bottom of leidersplein (sp?) nearish bulldog. Only about 2 minutes walk away. Also very close to vondelpark.

Places like grey area, amnesia, dampkring, Barneys lounge etc... were all within about 10 - 15 minutes walking distance.

Also looked as though the other rooms all had balconies looking over the garden so even if you dont have the ground floor room then you still get a nice outside area to sit.

Would definately reccomend this hotel =)

OK...I've checked (when I say checked, I really mean skimmed over, because I'm fairly mellow)..through this thread to see if the hotel I stayed in has been reviewed, and to my bleary eye, it would appear not.

So here it is:

The Park Hotel

Stadhouderskade 25
1071 ZD Amsterdam, Netherlands
+31 20 6711222

The Park Hotel is in the 'Leidseplein' area of Amsterdam, and when I was there it had a 4 star rating. At the time we got it for (in pounds) 250, 2 people for 4 nights. Which I thought was great value for the location and the added luxury. The staff were lovely, even the ROOM SERVICE guy! AND there was a free porn channel, but all was interested in was taking pictures of the Dutch subtitles....must have been the green... spliff.gif

Anyway..On with the review, so yeah...its pretty central, coffee shops are only a few stops by tram, or a 15 minute walk, the red light district i remember being slightly further cos I wanted to go to the hash museum wink.gif

The food was nice and if you get a room on the top floor (which you can request) the view is amazing. it was all in all a great hotel to stay if your gunna be there for the good part of a week.

I'd give it a 9.5/10 cool.gif

P.S. You could smoke spliffs in the rooms when I was there, it'll only be pure weed joints now I think.
Jah_Kozmyk
The A-Train Hotel

Stopped at this quirky hotel, almost opposite Central Station, with some mates in March'08.
Its incredibly narrow, even by 'dam standards and dec'ed out to be... like a train!

We were asked not to smoke spliff there, but had no complaints bout hanging out the window with me pipe!!

Its a 3 star jobbie, so isn't the cheapest, but is clean and well kept.

Well worth a visit.

Anyone Else Stayed at the A-TRAIN hotel... The missus & I are off in 9 days (whoop whoop!) Seems, to be well located and tripadvisor has mixed reviews, just wondering who here has used it? As we STILL have not booked a room! DOH!

We were going to stay at camping zeeburg, but all chalets are booked. (would have booked weeks ago, but friend who were coming blew their spending money and have sold their tickets, so now i'm basically fucked, looking for somehwhere in a good location, cheap (for the dam anyway)... Have satyed in Goa a number of times, so nothing there could come as much of a shock hotel-wise lol.gif

Noticed it's just down the road from Barneys Breakfast bar too, which will be well handy! stoned.gif

Many thanks for any advice folks... Going to book later today hopefully...

Cheers

Greenthumb_420
Noone?

BTW growndome you where you residing mate?
Greenthumb_420
Oh well, booked the Hotel Multatui opposite central... finally got somewhere to kippio!

Guess that'll do us wink1.gif
Rambone
How come you decided against the other hotel?
Greenthumb_420
Fnah! it was fully booked mate, bloody lucky to get in where we got TBH as we booked so late... But let me tell you I was pretty impressed by this hotel...

As a regular visitor to Goa no hotel in Europe could surely bother me very much!?! But after reading (only a couple) of shoddy reviews I was unsure as to what to expect. Well the place is excellent. in all fairness... The first night we were, rephrase, the missus was lol.gif (i was comatose, she doesn't smoke ganja), woken up a number of times between 2 and 6 am, neighbour with decks I think, I recall some awesome tunage at some point in the night. Next morning my missus was pissed off, myself, just thought an invite would have been nice, bouncing tunes are my kinda thing! (would have bought some shrooms b4hand) cool.gif

Which brings me to the mushrooms are banned bollocks. If they are, they are not enforcing it. They're e-v-e-r-y-where! wink1.gif

Anyway, the hotel is right opposite central station 14euro taxi lol.gif OR a 2 minute walk...

Excellent location, numerous good coffeeshops in the vicinity, pure cannabis tolerant bars around the corner in the street directly behind it (so you don't feel obliged to buy more fookin weed when you got 5 bags in your pocket anyway!).

Cost with taxes was +/- £450, therefore £112.50 av. per night, so from initially camping in zeeburg our costs got hiked from the start... and then we got there... lol.gif THEN our costs got hiked... talk about a tourist trap... Fuck me! fiver a pint! inclusive of one and a half inch head! fuckers... The only thing consistently cheap(ish) was the fuckin' coffee! lol.gif I think the cheapest pint I had was in the Bulldog in RLD at 4 euro if i recall... I shite thee not, next time I will be going for one or two nights MAX! 5 days was too expensive plus we'd seen practically everything we wanted to see within two days, plus, now we have seen it, whats to go back for apart from the ganja. I can get pretty fucking stoned in two days spliff.gif lol.gif

Didn't make brekkie at the hotel, but looked good the one morning I passed by... No complaints from me anyway, staff were cool, place was cool, not allowed to smoke dope in hotel [ahem] shop on the corner sells handy air freshener for ya! I smoked Amnesia Haze in there pure and no-one smelt it, the most notably fruity toot of the trip i think wink1.gif

Anyway, gonna do a little write up about the ganja I tried out there later... But as for the hotel, considering the cost of EVERYTHING out there... it was pretty sweet wink1.gif

Hope it helps stoned.gif

From BoB2oo9's recomendation (the picture of the pool, sauna, and the hot tub did it for me) I'm doing the Grand Hotel Amrath Amsterdam as well, 3 nights in a deluxe room in the middle of march for just under 500 quid (single room was ~116 a night, but as I'm hoping to have company, the king sized bed was called for, also the deluxe room from hotels.co.uk is fully refundable as opposed to the single from hotels or booking deluxe directly from the hotel (costs 7 quid more than booking from the hotel but worth it for the ability to call it off up to the day before my arrival smile.gif ).

Will report back on the hotel, who knows, maybe I'll even post pictures unlike naughty bob (4 months later and still no pics?! If my friend shows up I may give the hotel restaurant a try for dinner one night.

have a look at: Hotel Falcon Plaza - if you book through easybook or any of the other booking sites you can get a descent Clean room in a not too bad location for only 49 euro's a night a room. Plus as long as you sit by the window whilst smoking they don't complain (which is getting rarer in most hotels there now)

I ended up staying in a place called Maggie's Guesthouse. Prices were cheap (140 euroish for 3 midweek nights for me and the gf, prices were per room rather than per person - I booked it through hostelworld.com rather than direct through the guesthouse's own website, prices were somewhat cheaper that way).

Location was excellent, on Martelaarsgracht about 2-3 mins walk from central station, 10 mins walk from the Grey Area and a little less to the Greenhouse on Haarlemmerstraat. Room was spacious and clean enough (if you are a picky bugger you might find cause to complain but no issues for me). Upon arrival I asked the lady who checked us in and took payment whether smoking a joint in the room was OK, she laughed and said that it was fine. Only problem was the stairs - our room was on the top floor up four flights of the buggers, counted 75 steps up to the top which was a killer after smoking a bunch of weed and a few beers, someone who suffers from joint problems or the like might actually struggle if they were in one of the top rooms but I understand this is a problem for a lot of similar hotels in Amsterdam. Overall would recommend to anyone wanting some cheep, cheerful and toker friendly accomodation for a few days in Amsterdam.

Ok, didn't do pics of the hotel. not that I can share anyways as naked women are frowned upon by the rules. (well, and the woman in question might not be too pleased wink1.gif ) Have to say Amrath fcking rocked. Great location, good service, and frickin great tub/shower. we were upgraded to a + level room (one step up) with "city view" though the room was in the lower level so the city view was of people's legs, but hey, it was free and I'm not there for the outside view smile.gif The mini bar was useful too, each day it's restoked with any items you used. To the best of my knowledge here's the list:

2 bottles of coke
2 bottles of coke light
2 bottles of indian tonic
2 bottles of dutch "white" beer (decent)
2 bottles of sparkling water
2 bottles of regular water
2 bottles of OJ (surprisingly tasty)
1 (about the same size as the cokes)bottle of red wine
1 (about the same size as the cokes)bottle of white
1 airport bottle of absolute
1 airport bottle of cognac (hennesey I think)
1 airport bottle of gordon's
1 airport bottle of scotch (grouse, though from the menu sometimes it's johnny walker red)
1 big box of peanuts
1 chocolate/nuget bar (you know you're stoned when you actually eat this one.)
swear there was 1 more hard liquor but can't think of it.

There is also coffee/tea making facilities, for the coffee maker (pod unit) there are 6 servings included 2 of each of the following:
Decaffinated (espresso sized)
espresso (surprisingly enough espresso sized)
regular (full sized)
all coffees passed my taste test smile.gif

The tea is a black/chai type.

They include 2 robes with the rooms and have a complimentary golf umbrella for your visit.

there is officially a ban on tobacco, herb not-so-much, just be discreet-ish (there are still ashtrays in the rooms smile.gif )

Would highly recomend the amrath if you want a hotel around central station, note that while it may say it's climate controlled, it is NOT air conditioned, so in the same price range pick the American in liedsplein in the summer for the air conditioning (most rooms there also have balconies so smoking ban isn't a big deal) The american also has a very good buffet breakfast if you can get a deal on it, if not. well like the amrath, it's not worth 20E+ per person. The (eden at the mo) hotel american is also a lot closer to katsu wink1.gif I have a soft spot for the american as i spent a week there a number of years back for my bachelor party with a couple of female friends... Erm, right. Advantage of the amrath is it's a piece of piss to find again even if you're stoned off your ass as it's right next to central station and is rather easy to recognize. The bar serves food until 22:30 or 2300 and will allow you to take your food on plates back to your room to avoid the room service 7.50 charge smile.gif (the tuna wrap from the bar is rather tasty, skip the cheese plate from room service unless you don't need bread with your cheese smile.gif )

Oh, and the 32" tv's have Svideo, RCA, HDMI, and scart in in case you're the sort to bring movies/whatever with you. the svideo/rca is easily accessed, the scart and hdmi is a bit tricky to get to. Don't forget a 3.5mm earphone to rca adaptor if you're going to power the tv with your laptop!
