ive been with BT for years now & ive got the 8mb service (£25 pm + vat !!!!! ), the fastest its ever ran at was 4.5mb but for the last year its been really slow, sometimes its even dropped as low as 0.3mb pooh.gif but i think this is because i do a lot of downloading & they capped me, even tho they advertise an unlimited service, they brought in the fair use policy, basically if you download between 5pm & 10pm, they slow you down to a snails pace, the tech phone numbers also a joke, your put through to india & its a bitch trying to understand them !

overall, the service is reliable if you dont download much but theres better providers out there.

my gfs with virgin media & has the 20mb service for £20pm & runs at about 14mb, still super fast wink.gif

Just FYO - Virgin cable broadband don't do traffic shaping as such - what they do is if you down/upload over such an amount during certain hours, then they restrict the speed of your connection. The amount you can download and the speed restriction vary by package type.

Have a look at this page.

Stay away from BT Broadband , BE Broadband and Virgin Media

BT use something to limit your torrents , BE send you letters according to other users of this site for torrenting, Virgin are bringing in net shaping (torrent restrictions) next year and already limit you for a week if you downlod more than 700mb between about 4pm to 4am , im not 100% sure about the times but a friend spent hours complaining to Virgin about his net before they told him how it works , i know he said something that it is assessed every sunday as to who is being limited also they send out letters as well.

I am in the same boat i am looking for a new provider (currently with Virgin) that isnt part of that new group of isp's agreeing to monitor piracy and ones who dont have torrent restrictions in place. I have had nildram are meant to have the best customer service and speeds but im not sure on there policies with regards to torrenting (i know its against terms of use with everyone). If anyone knows of any good providers torrent friendly please let me know.

Oh and O2 own BE so I doubt there any better than BE are in regards to torrenting

Im with Virgin 2 mb and down load alot , mainly TV shows which I can watch on my Virgin set if I could actually get GF away from it and I dont seem to get limited , nor have i recieved a letter but I want to leave as like you said the price goes up when you get past the 1st year

I use BT and am pretty happy with em.The tech guys in india have been great when Ive needed them
...Its supposed to be 8mb,but I get 3-4mb...........I had a BT engineer round the other day cause my
computer was running really slow.....while sorting it out he explained that you only get 8mb if you
live right next door to the exchange..!! then it continues to drop off the further you move away from exchange.
Speed will never be uniform till the whole system is fiber optic....Virgin have just introduced 50mb...but in
very limited areas.....In Korea you can have 80mb.!!.......they reckon eventualy everyone will have 200+mb
If i was you Id find out how close to the exchange you live and ask BT what sort of speed you would get....M smoke.gif

Talk Talk (Carphone warehouse) take some beating mind... check their website, I pay £15.00 per month, 2mb speed, unlimited downloads (which I hammer!) and the line never drops, and that includes your bt line rental! yep I pay nothing to b.t. at all!!!

I'm with BT, had to call customer service, was on for ages on my mobile and the call cost me £25 cry.gif Also was a feckin indian call centre. Apart from that all's good

BT sound

service good

help good

cost also good

but then after threatening them about there service I got the monthly charge halved, so pay @12.00 a month.

Bt are one of the most expensive out there to be fair, If it wasn't for all the little old ladies " well I've always used them, they're british too, and British gas I wouldn't swap" they wouldnt have anywhere near the same stake in the market place... their customer service is renowned for being shit, like 25 mins. average wait to speak to someone whose second language is English shit.

I couldn't wait to get away from them and have never and will never look back.

If you’re with BT then yes they can cap your connection speed if you're downloading loads of data, they call it a fair play policy but you have to download a fair bit. I download shit loads of data and we did get capped. After consultation our speed was strangely re-established to its former level. One thing though if you reboot your router then it may take a couple of days to get back up to full connection speeds. If you go to http://speedtester.bt.com/ and follow the instructions you can suss out your connection status. They also call you up within a day or so to see if the problem still exists. If it does then they will try to fix it or resolve it in some way on that call, they also gave me a freephone number to call with a pin number so I could get back to the same tech person. If he wasn't available you could leave a message and he will call you back, very reasonable plus the guy was very knowledgeable. Good service, no complaints as mentioned before if you're stuck on a land line like I am with no cable options then I would rather have a service provider that had responsibility for my internet connection the land line and the exchange. That way he has sole responsibility for the whole lot so I can't be fobbed off by my ISP with the reason my connection is poor is due to a fault on the land line not our problem. Seen it so many times with people who use an ISP who is not there land line provider. If you're on cable then pffft then you’re warping away while some of us remain on steam power.
