i have also seen these, as there sooo cheap, please buy one & report back on your findings, im sure it will help/inform many many other people thinking/wondering about them.
if you decide not to, i think i might give it a try, if it fails, thats no hardship, as there pocket change, plus it will come in handy for something one day...

nice one mate
looks a bit naf tbh, you would not catch me using it on my rvk
1 for the life of the rvk motor and 2 for the possibility of it doing other damage(s), like failing x no air = deadplants, not worth using imho
you didnt say why you want to slow down your rvk?? (i imagine you know, but some rvks can be put onto slower mode, but some dont have this feature, check out the wires/manual

i want to slow down my rvk for 2 reasons
1 noise
2 when on full my temps drop shit loads
so if can slow it down a little , i think the noise level might drop also might be able to control my temps a bit better

It's not a variac so probably little different to the fan controllers from B&Q.

It'll be just like one of those B&Q light dimmers, I reckon...

Dec 7 2008, 12:52 AM

hmm i may buy me one of these, the fan i have is overclocked for 2m(2). Atleast it cant possibly fail on smaller fans as they are only 3-5amps

bought the exact one just like the picture on amazon, and it buzzes, and the fan buzzes. Now I've got it on a variac and it is much more quiet

yeh, it used to be two separate threads untill a mod merged em
this dimmer didnt work on an rvk or a clip on fan. you turn it down a fraction and they just stop... waste of money imo.

there you go then
they adjust the frequency in the motor if i remember correctly, which doesn't sound too good tbh
I don't know if it causes any harm, but not worth the risk... I'd prefer to put rvk on a timer then use one of these, just my 2p though

well bathroom fans aren't designed to run 24/7. though I have run one myself due to lack of funds that lasted 6 months + running 24/7 (manrose)
anyways that might of been the reason why it burnt out? how old was the fan before you used the speed controller?

just thought id add that i also got 1 for my bathroom fan and it doesnt work till about half way then makes a funny noise an doesnt work till you turn it up abit, so not that ideal for bathroom fan. but tried it on my 150 ruck and works spot on, slows it right down to the minimum and right up no probs

for bigger fans you need a variac/5 step/manual/transformer type, because those small glorified dimmers will blow your capacitor on bigger fans = dead fan
