AVG 8. Used it for three years, well previous versions. No problems.

I've used AVG and it's good, switched to Avira Antivir Personal (also free) some time last year as it had very good reviews - reminds me to check to see if it's still rated highly!

Edit - spelling as usual

Edit2 - Free antivirus programs usually don't have the anti-spyware part included, to encourage you to buy the full version. Good freebie stuff I've used for years - Ad-Aware (Lavasoft), Spybot Search & Destroy (Safer Networking Ltd) and Spyware Blaster (Javacoolsoftware). Be careful when downloading free anti-spyware progs as the scummy spyware merchants often release their own version, or at least a prog with the same name, which actually contains its own spyware. Make sure if you download one of these that you get it from the website of the company in brackets. MajorGeeks is a good place to start to check out all kinds of software - they have user ratings and links to the latest versions, and are trustworthy too!

HiJackThis is a great tool, to be sure, but it's no good without someone knowledgeable to interpret the scans that it produces. wink1.gif

If you do download/install and run it, by all means post a copy of the scan result in this thread and I'd be more than happy to go over it for you. thumbsup.gif

If you want to do an immediate total scan of your machine, then you can use the free Ewido Online Scanner and see what that says.

AVG has always been a decent, free-for-personal-use antivirus for Win, but it's gone downhill somewhat since version 8 - "bloatware" is the word that comes to mind...

Avast! still isn't too bad, though, and the Comodo Firewall is pretty decent, too. (and both are free-for-personal-use, too)

AVG, Nod32 and kaspersky are pretty good (though kaspersky is pretty cpu hungry)
nod32 is pretty efficient
ccleaner (or crapcleaner) is a really good tool for keeping all unneccessary files deleted and also keeps your registry clean and efficient
stay away from mcaffee or norton

Comodo.com it's all there with free updates for life
and it works better than AVG

Not quite. It looks like it gives you just a few months free but it automatically extends its registration period as you get close to the "end" date. I've been using it for some time - I've seen it do the extending thing at least twice!
