Full Version: New Fogging Prop

Hello All.
I've knocked up a DIY prop, from a tub and an ultrasonic mister/fogger, now got it fogging 15on 15 off, (it was on 15 on 45 off), done last night about 3 bells, so theyve been in just over 12 hours, solution temp is fine at 22 24 deg C, 14-18 inches under a 200 watt enviro floro, (not acctually directly under, it is actually directly over a couple mums).
I'm not using a prop lid, (everyone reckons they arn't needed), BUT they are Badly wilted, is this normal after 12 13 hours, and they will stand back up??????
I've also got some airstones in the tub to help with oxy, and the surface of the solution is only about an Inch to 1,1/4 below the baskets, so they are getting very slightly splashed by the bubbles too, (like a bubble prop).
OH yeh BTW theyre in 2 inch baskets, held in with DIY neoprene collars, (pipe insulation, and thin closed cell foam).
From what I've read folk have had good success with this type of system, and all the params seem OK.
Can anyone shed any light, give any tips??????
TIA.

Hi All.

WOW Jiffa, man was that quick.
Cheers, I changed it from 15 on 45 off to 15 on 15 off, just about an hour ago, if theres no sighn of improvemnt in another 30 mins I'll stick a lid on as you suggest.
Thanks again.

Put a lid on it til you can see roots poking through your medium. Then it's time to take the lid off and harden them off. Thats the method i use and i only have to mist once a day at the most.

Never heard of not putting the lid on. Where did you read that?

Hi All.
In almost every thread/post I've read.
Theyre in a aeroponic prop, not in dirt, not in any medium actually, just poking down through neoprene rings into empty baskets.
And nearly everybody reports not having to use prop lids AT ALL!!!
Some report a small amount of initial wilting, then thyre supposedly fine, nobbles at 3 4 days, small roots 5 7 days, roots 9 12 days.
Come on you guys who've made/used these??????
TIA.

34.gif Ok gotcha. Not used any aeropinics but arent they more of a spray/misting sytsem than a fogging system? Could be that it's just not wet enough for them?

Hiya All.
No m8, this is a true fogging/misting box. its an ultrasonic fogger, supposedly on the order of 5 microns min droplet size.

I've read a few threads where folk have used these successfuly, but I'm not rating it at all. Gonna be changing over to my bigger one anytime now, and I think I'm gonna ditch the ultrasonic jobby, and go over to my pump and sprayer affair.
Posted on a few forums, and can't get much response from anyone who's used these in anger.

Sorry to hear of your problems martian,I can't be much help as I've no fogger experience but I can tell you the cuttings won't recover.

You could try removing them, cutting the stems back and placing in water, that might rehydrate them.

Are foggers meant to have on off periods?

I'da thought they'd have to be more on than off to prevent drying out but as I say I'm not genned up on aeroponics.

If I was you, next time leave the lid on for the first 4 days minimum.

Hi All.
Just a quick update.
Cuttings looking a whole lot better now, the bigger ones are looking the best, but even the scrawny (should really have gone in the bin) scraggy ones are perking up a bit now.
I put the lid on yesterday, and misted once.
I reckon most will make it, dunno how long it'll take though, but all temps are OK, and everything else about it seems OK.
Shouldn't really have a prob with pathogens either, I have a ozone (o3) generator, and I give it a blast every 3 or 4 days, (should kill any nasty badness, and help to oxy up the solution).
Tara Folks.
