I been wondering this for a while, Alot of UK growers dont seem to like them, but the Americans and Oz's seem to love them..
I have heard they are less efficient than a 600, but surely if you can keep temps down then this wouldnt be so bad? Or are they really that hot?
I would use one if I wanted to grow some big Sativas or if I was going to do a vert cage grow maybe.
The cost of electricity might be a factor. It always feels expensive to those paying for it but some Americans seem to pay in cents per Kw/hr what we pay in pence, maybe less. If you're already running aircon then having it handle the grow as well seems a natural step. Better cooling due to the aircon and 1Kw is looking good.
I wish someone would
design and market ballasts just for us. Even Lumatek have their ballasts as if total cost of ownership (for businesses) was a factor. It costs us nothing in wages to change a bulb so why do the things have mega bulb life? Wind it up until the bulb starts to be below par at 6 months. About 750w should do it, screw in a 600w bulb and have it as bright as a 1Kw.
