Full Version: How important is it that Garden centers store compost indoors?

After reading through the which? compost reviews I decided to get a bag of Homebase multipurpose. Then just yesterday I was reading yesterday about someone kicking off because their compost was stored outside in the garden center.

This is where Homebase store all their MP compost as far as I know. My question is, have I ballsed right up by buying this stuff because it was outdoors and a bit soggy? Or doesn't it really matter if the compo is stored outdoors?

As a side note, has anyone used the homebase stuff? If so, how does it compare to the westlands gear? They store some westlands stuff inside you see.

Cheers.

I can't think of many places who store the compost indoors, i always seem to get mine from outdoors with exception of seedling composts and i had some from a growshop once.

Actually come to think about it the ones that i had indoors had pests in them, but who knows where they were stored before making it to the shops.

Never tried homebase compost so can't comment on that buddy, but if it did well in the which trials then i'd give it a go smile.gif

If it's 'soggy' as you describe then I'd suggest grabbing a handfull and have a good old smell of it, you can tell if its off cos it dont have that nice earthy aroma and looks very dark and muddy.
