Basically, I have a small closet. I measured it out, and got 1x1 yards, the height is (guessing) 8 feet. I don't have the money to spend on a high pressure sodium or metal halide lighting system, and I've never grown before. A friend of mine told me that you can use fluorescent lighting for the entire life of the plant? I have a few questions to ask.

How tall should a grow space be? People have told me that you can prune a plant at two feet and continue to prune it to get it extremely bushy before it buds, so would a 3-4 foot height be good enough?

Right now my options are stick it in the closet, or construct a stealth grow box. Any suggestions? Like I said, this is for two to four plants. But can I really use fluorescent lighting for the entire lifespan?

fluros dont really cut it for flowering mate sad.gif (unless you use alot of them)

they WILL grow under them, but dont expect to yields compared to hps/mh

imo you only get out what you put in,

my first grow was with a 250w hps

best thing i ever done

although i wish i started with a 400w rofl.gif

First off - welcome to the best forum going for help and advice wink.gif

It sound as if you are where I was a couple of weeks back. Look at the Growroom Design area and you'll find a few builds along the same lines. Smokey is bang on. I was lucky enough to be able to get a S/H 400W HPS light along with loads of other bits for not much money. Be warned mind, don't buy S/H unless you know what ur looking at. Again I was lucky enough to have some help. It can be expensive setting up from scratch, but how much do you spend on crap street weed? For the price of a couple of oz you can get a very nice light and hood. Even if you start with a 250W it'll be much better than FLs.

I stopped buying street weed and saved my £££s so that I could finance my build. I miss the smoke, but I think it's done me good to be off it for a while.

Best of luck m8.

You can make a pretty decent growspace in a wardrobe/closet, as long as you get your temps right with good ventilation.

You won't get as good yield with flouros as you will a decent HPS - I use a blue Enviro for vegging, but you'd want red for flowering, so may as well get a HPS instead.

Would a shelf work if I didn't use the shelves (took them out) and double sided it with wood, and equipped with vents?

Germinating right now, have fluorescent lights for the shelf. When I put the seeds in the cup of water, they floated. I have 7 in a cup of water and the other 4 are in dixie cups sowing... Trying two methods stoned.gif

Yields are pretty crap with a CFL, but half oz a plant is possible providing the plant does not get too tall. A friend of mine grows with a CFL & his wardrobe has 5ft of height (more for convection) and his plants get to about a foot tall (from the same cuttings & same soil I grow that get to 4ft under a 600W & yeild 3 to 4 oz per plant wink1.gif ).

4ft minimum I'd say, 6ft preferable, as I bet you'll be wanting to upgrade to a HPS pretty soon wink1.gif

Would these work?

Howdy apocalypse and welcome to UK420! yahoo.gif I'm in SF and can perhaps offer you some good advice.

IMO stay away from cfl's if you can. They are convenient but not as good as tube fluros. If you go all fluros do some research here and check out the LST way of growing or SCROG. IMO these methods help you get the most of a pure fluro grow.

If you go all fluro the trick is to keep your plants short as fluros do not penetrate well into the plant and need to be close because of that. Not only is having a set of tubes over the plants needed, you would do well to have some on the walls (which should be close to the plants and either white or mylar/fylon), say at least one 2 foot tube per corner. This will help with the light penetration issues. Do keep the dead-ish leaves well trimmed and out of the way.

Keep in mind that to grow properly with fluros, you almost have to spend as much money as you would on a decent 250W HID. What I do is grow/veg my plants under fluro tubes and flower under a combo of HPS and MH. Which is an advanced trick. For high yield most folks go with HPS for flowering and for greater psychoactive effects, folks go with pure MH for flower and sometimes for the entire grow! I have it from an incredible grower that a combination of HPS and MH is a great compromise (for flowering) but again, thats an advanced trick for advanced growers.

Me grow diary link is in me sig file so click on it if you want a look see. Remember that all good growers are patient and persevere!

Good Luck!

A friend of mine is giving me his old fluros for free =] Just gotta set up the vents. I was thinking of using a box with a fan? Like a ghetto card board box setup, so the closet door can be open?
