I havent grown or been into growing plats for a few years but my friend tells me LED lighting or more specifically, UFO led lights are fantastic.

I would like to find out as much info on these as possible from peope with experience with them and HPS lighting before i buy one.

I would like to know-
-Are they really that good?
-Whats the penetration like into the canopy? As good as a 400watter?I hear better but thats in an advert.
-How much yeald is possible? Same as 400w or less?
-Same growth cycle for same strain?
-How long does it take to veg? same as metal halide?
-where are they made?
-Is it possible to buy in australia?

What is the coverage like? 3ft by 3ft?

It sounds too good to be true. The ad is all sales pitch and little information. No lumen output rating, no recommended distance from canopy (which greatly affects coverage area) and no links to real world testing. I would stay away until these issues are addressed.

Has your friend actually used these lights? How were they used? Results?

No he hasnt used one yet just read a lot about them.

He lives in asia in a country i cant mention as if he gets caught its life sentance in growing.

I had better email him and ask a bit more info.
And where to find peoples true oppinions on them.

However if its mostly true, it would be good for him as electricity is a problem in that country.

well, most of the UK folks are in bed at the moment. Scraglor is super knowledgable about electric concerns as well as EM2. I'm certain they will pop in with some comments as many others within the next 24 hours.

You can also do a search in the Lighting forum here for answers. There is a special sub-forum on LEDs and micro grows that might be useful to you. Most folks here consider LED technology to be not far advanced enough to be effective for growing good bud.

My sympathies for your friends legal issues. That really sucks! cry.gif

Total. Unadulterated. Snakeoil.
Amazing to see it sold alongside proper growlamps.
They get away with it because people are too scared to tell trading standards what they were growing.

"The 1 watt LED is one of the most efficient light sources in the world (lumens per watt)"
well, er, maybe ... if it's a 1 watt lamp you're after ..
I was going to say a 20 watt CFL is more efficient than 20, 1 watt LEDs ..maybe not, but it's certainly a lot cheaper ..

This thing claims to be 70 watts.
I would want to see a side by side with a 70 watt HPS.

Yes, long lamp life is interesting to factor in, but HID lamps appear, for the moment to be the best option.

It would be fun to get hold of a 66 watt LED streetlamp to play with :-

the hps will almost certainly piss allover the led lamp, it's all hype. i've yet to see an led grow come close.

there was one side by side grow of a ufo versus a 400w on youtube that was posted up on here, where the guy actually got more bud per kw/hr (total energy used over the grow) from the led lamp. what people failed to notice was that the guy only got around 100 grams of dried bud from the 400w hps, and people regularly get 400 grams of dried bud from a 400w in the same time span!!!! so again, proved to be a scam

and as compostverte says, at the price they are sold for, they are a total 100% con!!! go and get yourself an HPS lamp for about $100 and start yourself off properly!

good luck with the grow! thumbsup.gif

THAT would be very cool! I would imagine they are for sale, yes?

It'll be a while before Screwfix have 'em ...

Unfortunately they're the wrong colour - white LEDs - which are blue LEDs with added "phosphor" - maybe they'll produce special ones for red light areas. naughty.gif

Nasa only ever started looking at them for vegetative growth anyway - for growing lettuces etc.

For that purpose they do quite ok, not for flowering weed unfortunately.
Randalizer
uhhh, isn't "white light" acceptable for growing?

Just not very efficient - the most efficient LEDs are red ones - the first colour they ever made ....

I'm still suprised that some clever clogs hasnt made HID reflectors with blue LED's mounted in littles holes screwed in the actual reflector. That way you cold use true HPS (not gro-lux etc) To get the maximum red output and have a few blue LED's aswell to give a bit of balance etc.
scraglor
because if it was covered in led's it wouldn't be very reflective!

A: wouldnt need to be covered
B: would be refractive 13.gif

led's are convex and designed to diffuse light out as a point source, conversely light coming the from outside of the LED will be focused onto the diode emission gap, and just because it's not covering the surface it would still take away a lot of the reflective surface area

on top of that, the led's would have to be (in diode terms) miles away from the plants due to the heat from the hps. sorry dude, just being honest
