Is this possible or is it doomed to failure?

I think the clue is in the wattage rating ?

I have a diamond reflector for a 400w bulb, can I reuse this with a 250w bulb and ballast?
What about envirolights, could I use the same reflector?

you can use the 250w lamp and 250w ballast with it
but you wont get an enviro in it
yeah edit to clarify the 250 ballast and 250w lamp

Dont do it!!! The bulb could shatter as your putting far too much current through it!!

you could put a 250w bulb in a 400w reflector, as long as you use a 250w ballast.
with an envirolite, (providing it fits) you would have to put a plug on the end of the cable, as envirolites have an inbuilt ballast.

I don't think the envirolites will fit the reflector
TightBud
Sep 28 2008, 06:46 PM
dont think you'll get an enviro to fit into a Diamond ,due to the shape of the reflector
the enviro is a much larger diameter than a HID lamp
the E40 fitting is the same , its just the shape of the diamond having the dip in on the top

so will a 250w bulb just pack in a 400w ballast bastard

Doomed to fail my. Rule No1 Bulb and Ballast have got to be the same Wats, if the reflector you have is the one with the buit in 400W balast then no this will blow up your 250W bulb just buy a new 400W bulb they are under £30 a new ballast will cost alot more!

I get that impression
Son-T-Plus 250w lights - are they any good? I'm struggling to find many 250 bulbs on greens. They mention a 250w Sunmaster. What about a SUNMASTER Warm Deluxe 250w?
How about a MH for veg and a Son-T-Plus for flowering?

putting an oversized lamp in an undersized ballast wont do too much harm, but will wear the lamp electrodes out quicker and not so good for the ballast or the ignitor
putting an undersized lamp in an oversized ballast will fuck the lamp, you'll waste shit loads of energy an the lamp will put out less light and more heat than the correct higher wattage lamp

If your still gonna ask the question (DONT BOTHER, JUST TRY IT FOR YOURSELF)
No Accidents accured! Thank God!!

The current to the lamp if you're using a 400w starter and a 250w won't change, the 400w ballast will still deliver the starting current of a 400w bulb, you can only get the current the started was designed for, no more.
The problem you'll have is the 250w buld is designad to ignite using a lot less current compared to the 400w bulb. But the 400w ballast will be putting a lot more current through the 205w bulb than what it was designed for.
So the ballast will kill the bulb.
How long it will last... who knows... but the bulb lifespan will be greatly reduced.
