The greatest thing about owning a next-gen console is that you know you won’t be needing to upgrade that puppy to play the latest and greatest games on it. Gone are the days of the Nintendo 64 era when one had to go out and buy the Expansion Pak to increase the console’s memory from a whopping 4mb to 8mb, just so you can access all the bells and whistles of Perfect Dark. No sirree, we gamers of the 21st century expect to be able to play all the latest games on our beautiful next-gen consoles until the day the post-next-gen consoles are released. At least that is what we want, although we see a danger for the Xbox 720 and PS4 all the same.

So when it was announced that GTA IV was going to be seeing its inevitable iteration on the PC, keyboard and mouse gamers around the globe started saving their spare change in case they required an upgrade. Well the news is in today that said PC gamers who haven’t had the chance to play GTA IV on a next-gen console will not have to necessarily break open their piggybanks to enjoy it on their gaming rigs. In fact, most PC gamers will get to experience it for cheaper that their console brothers!

The recommended specs for GTA IV are; Windows XP SP2, Dual core processor (Intel Pentium D or above), 2GB of RAM, 18GB of hard drive space, a 512MB Direct 3D 10 compatible video card or Direct3D 9 card, and a DVD dual-layer drive. All things considered, the recommended settings could have been a whole lot loftier.

For the PC exclusive crowd out there who haven’t had the chance of playing GTA IV yet, look forward to exploring Liberty City later this year.

Ok, I recently upgraded my pc a bit and am tempted to buy the game, but have two concerns. First one is, I've read a few people having higher spec computers than mine who have problems running the game, but there doesn't appear to be a demo I can download to see if it will run ok on my machine. The other thing is, does it have all that unnecessary crap that was in San Andreas, like building yourself up, getting yourself fat and all that shit? I don't want to spend £30 on something I can't or won't use and once you open it Game won't take it back.

My machine specs are:

AMD 64 x2 @ 2.9 ghz
4gb of RAM
512mb ATI HD4670 gc
Windows XP

Just wondering if anyone has a similar spec machine and how did it run on their machine? Cheers UK420 - happy gaming! smile.gif

Saintsrow 2 beats the shit outta GTA4 and i've bought every GTA since the very first top down view one.

And rockstar sold their souls to mircosoft, how you gonna build a title up through 3 games on ps2 then make a third of gta4 x box only?
Culchi
It's out on ps3 though isn't it? But yeah, that was my other concern, reading the back of the box (either my eyesight's going or writing's getting smaller and blurrier these days), but I noticed it had a load of extra shit required like service pack 3, internet explorer, games for windows live and all that stuff, which was another factor in me putting it back on the shelf the other day. Cheers for the reply. smile.gif

I've got the 512MB 4850, and it works just fine on mine with everything on high. thumbsup.gif

It's supposed to be quite a CPU-intensive game as well, though, and I've got a Core2Duo E8500 which is quite a bit more powerful than your AMD X2, but I reckon it should be OK for you. I'm running with 4GB RAM as well.

I'm running Vi$ta Ultimate 64Bit just for my games, and they all seem to work really well with it. guitar.gif

I quite liked the game, and played it right through - there's none of that character levelling like from San Andreas with the fat levels, fitness levels etc. - but you do have 'friends' that you can take out for 'activities' like bowling, darts etc., to keep them sweet with you so that you can use their special facilities to help you. 'Brucie' will give you a lift in his chopper to anywhere with a helipad in the city, and your cousin will give you a free cab-ride, Irish Packie will provide you with car bombs, and Little Jacob will give you cheap deals on Kevlar vests and weapons etc..

e²a: ¿So what if a game needs SP3, IE and GfwL? These are just free s/w that you can just download anytime you like. unsure.gif
Culchi
Cheers Scribb|e, appreciate the reply. As for the SP3, IE, GfWL and all that, I don't like any of it. Although I'm limited to using Windows to play games, the less Micro$oft products I have running, the better I feel, if you know what I mean? Bit disappointing that they aren't bringing DirectX10 out for XP, but I guess if they did that, who the hell would buy Vista? lol.gif Was hoping to add another 4gb of RAM next week though (dirt cheap at the minute), then if I ever have the money change the processor to a 3ghz quad core phenom - are they any good btw? Am sure they'd be better than my x2, but this was a budget upgrade and my first AMD tbh. So far I've been able to run DoW2, Crysis, Dead Space, Kane & Lynch, Bioshock, etc with no problems (other than I'm crap at them), just that on the Game site the reviews say GTA4 is a bit hardware intensive, so thought maybe my machine isn't up to scratch. Maybe I should just wait for the (fully patched) budget release? Thanks again. smile.gif
Scribb|e
There's absolutely no point in you getting another 4GB of RAM unless you're running a 64-bit operating system. The (presumably 32-bit) XP you're running now will only be able to see and use 3.5GB of the RAM you have now. Save your money. wink1.gif

Thanks for the tip Scribb|e - I downloaded and have installed Ubuntu 64 bit this morning, might get a copy of vista on it to see how it runs (haven't seen it going yet - then again I hear a lot of people who did buy it haven't either lol.gif). Cheers! smile.gif

picked up a copy of gta iv in morrisons a month or so back for £9.99,had to install a patch to get it to run properly on my gt8600 258mb graphics card, but with a quad core 6600 and 4 gig ram it works fine.If only i could get into kates knickers
Hashishin
I have found that sometimes it crashes but that is normally due to the lack of graphics card memory (you are running the game on too high specs within the options and graphics settings available in the options before you start the game) , if it does crash due to this it normally comes up with Fatal Error RESC10 your computer is out of video memory please reboot your system. After I found out that more power could be supplied to my graphics card and that I never connected it to the PSU correctly in the first place (never connected all of the power leads as it is my first custom build doh.gif ) then it runns alot better anyway and hardly ever crashes.
Also found that installing the patch for the game from Rockstar helped aswell.
Culchi
Cheers for the input folks. I decided to take the plunge yesterday and bought the game. Spent a while getting it installed and trying to get my joypad working, which I finally did by downloading the latest patch (cheers HT). Have to use intellimouse to configure my extra mouse buttons, which is no big deal, just I use the extra buttons for forward and sprint, which leaves me one hand free to smoke. Haven't played it much yet tbh, just driving round getting the feel of the place and listening to the radio stations - the main reason I play GTA games - the ads are fucking hilarious! rofl.gif

Anyway, as I say, thanks again UK420 gamers. The game defaulted to a mix of medium and high settings btw @ max res for my monitor, so sweet dreams are made of this. Am off now to try and find my first Banshee - please tell me there's Banshees in it - I'll be so disappointed if there isn't - my favourite car in the whole game. Happy gaming! biggrin.gif
Hashishin
Hi Culchi, yes the Banshee is still in the game, so are alot of other sweet rides guitar.gif . There is a glitch in the game which respawns the vehicle that you happen to be driving. The best way to take advantage of this is to get into the vehicle that you want (find one and steal it) and then drive it past one of your safe houses with the yellow parking bays marked on the road outside. Drive it up and down the road and around the block, sooner or later you will see someone driving the same vehicle as you, block them in with your vehicle (perform a U turn infront of them or something) jump out of your vehicle, run up to the vehicle that you want to nick and pull the person from the vehicle. If they don't run off scared then aim your gun at them and this will see them off. Jump in their car, drive it 30 yards down the road towards your safehouse and then park it up at the side of the road. Jump out and run back to the original vehicle that you had in the first place, then drive this 30 yards infront of the vehicle that you stolen and have parked up. Don't drive off more than 30 yards down the road or sometimes cars will disappear that you have parked up. Keep repeating the process until you reach your parking bays at your safehouse and then you have 2 of the same sort of vehicle that you want. This little trick also works with the Infernus that you will have given to you later on in the game, so if you want you can have 2 parked outside of each safehouse smoke.gif .

E2A: The fast car that looks like a Zonda/Lamborghini is the Infernus, you only get the chance to have it once in the game smile.gif . Personally I prefer using a xbox 360 controller plugged in through the USB port on the PC, works like a dream.
Jon Clobert
Theres a right good fast car that looks like a Zonada --- and them sultan RS'

cheers hashisin : nice tip

------------

i bought mysel a new pc to run this game ! quad core and all that jazz !
runs wicked !

peace all ! biggrin.gif
Culchi
Cheers for the tip HT. My choice of parked vehicles in the previous games usually included a banshee, a motorbike, a cop car, a police motorbike, a scooter and another banshee. lol.gif

Haven't had a chance to listen to them all the way through yet, or add my own tunes either, but just wondering if anyone has a favourite GTA radio station? Am just wondering if I can set it to play just the ads, could cruise round town in my banshee, spliff in me gob, listening to them all day - FAF! I do tend to crash a bit more often then though. rofl.gif
