Full Version: Seeking Advice for Stealth Grow-Cube

Hello all ! I'm hoping some of you will be able to guide me toward eventually growing my own smoke. First of all I live in a house with 3 roomates, my room is in the corner of a basement with another room adjacent to mine. The other 2 rooms are directly above mine. I am the only smoker in the house, my roomates know this and are pot-friendly but would freak if they knew I was growing.

I am planning on building a gro-cube out of 3/4in particleboard, measuring 4ft tall by 18in wide. Components include 4 24in fluorescent fixtures for each corner with a 100watt HPS mounted to the lid. Ventilation via two 3in round holes one upper and one lower with a 3in computer-case fan for the upper, along with light traps for both the holes. Interior will be painted flat white for light reflection.

Basically what I'm asking is: Is it going to be possible to grow my own stash, with a design similar to the one mentioned above, in my room in the corner of the basement, without the 3 roomies finding out ?

I hope someone has some miracles up their sleeve because there is no other way for me to enjoy the sweet mary jane.

I am open to any and all forms of advice and will hugely appreciate any and all suggestions !

I don't have any much experience of small grow cabs I'm afraid, but what you propose sounds good to me.

The main thing that comes to mind is air scrubbing to remove the smell, you haven't mentioned a carbon filter at all. If you house starts stinking to high heaven of weed then the others might cotton on to the fact that you're growing. If you did have a carbon filter, or somesort of makeshift activated carbon air filter, you would need to have negative pressure in the growcab to stop smells from leaking, the normal way to achieve this is to have a bigger exhaust fan than what you're using to input air.

Good luck with the grow, sounds a nice little setup you've got planned, hope it all goes well, should get some nice smoke out of that.

Thanks for the reply Krys Farm. So smell is probably going to be my main (possibly only) concern. I suppose there's going to be no way to completely avoid smells when flowering cannabis. I'm unfamiliar with air scrubbing, but I have heard of odor eliminating pucks from ONA ? Any suggestions to completely eliminate smell, as I can't have any incriminating smells wafting out of my room smile.gif

Also do you think that I will be able to grow dense resinous buds succesfully with this type of setup ? I don't think I'm going to be able to supply with co2, and I'm just going to be growing one plant because I think this type of setup is only for one plant and it's going to be in soil.

Thanks Again

Hi mate, yeah main problems would be smell, the noise from the fans, ensuring air circulation is adequate. You could completely remove smells using a carbon filter and inline fan, but they ain't cheap. I've read about people making their own carbon filters for small cabs but you might have a problem with a fan that is powerful enough to push the air through the activated carbon under pressure.

I don't think the odour eliminating socks are much good mate, there is a thread on here about them where people who have used them say their opinions on what they thought of them.

You could also think about growing in a computer case, very tricky to achieve, but it's another stealthy option which people have gone with.

What is the depth of your proposed growcab, you say it is 4 foot in height, which is 1.2m high (I've just had to use a converter, I don't know my feet from my elbow), and the width is nearly 1/2 metre. If your lighting fixtures are 24" long then I imagine it is going to be at least that deep. I have a Homebox XS tent which is around the same size I think, about 1/2mx1/2m and about 1m tall. If that is the size then I would have thought a cooltube with a 250w HPS light would be good, with a 100mm inline fan and carbon filter, you could mount the filter on the back if you're struggling for space.

The HPS bulbs can get quite hot so if you're doing it on a budget you may be able to get a smaller HPS security type light. If you're in the UK screwfixdirect do a 75w and a 150w I think. Whether you get dense resinous buds will mainly depend on lighting power and ventillation. You won't need additional CO2, it's not very feasible unless it's in a sealed room, your plants will get all the CO2 they need from the air venting.

How many plants you have depends on how you grow them, and whether you grow from seed or from clone. Best to consider a scrog to maximise yields I think.

Best thing to do would be to have a look in the microgrower threads that the previous poster linked to. See if you can find people with a similar space and see how they are venting, the lights they are using and what the yields are like so you can get a better idea of what to expect and how to go about it. You might be able to get a good working design which somebody has already done, and tested, and modified to get it working to their requirements.

Ideally though you should probably wait until you have your own place or it is more secure, if somebody comes into your room they might ask questions about your box. If you're at university or something I wouldn't want to recommend you to do it in case things go pearshaped, make sure you have a good think about things first of whether it is feasible or not. Don't forget it takes some time to veg the plants from seed, maybe 6-8 weeks then another 10 weeks for flowering, another 10 days to dry it, and it is all a learning curve so you are bound to make mistakes the first time.

All the best, hope everything works out for you
