Depends what river your fishing really mate but the best advice I can give,is, if your really after a barbel ignore all the little knocks and pulls on your rod tip and wait for your rod to nearly get dragged in!

i second that
also dont be in too much of a rush to start fishing
bait a couple of swims and leave them for a while and have a fish in another swim.
try the baited swims after a few hours.
dont cast in out,in out-if your baits in the right place and your not getting bites or knocks its prob becouse theres no barbel there.
hope this helps

The best advise I can for barbel fishing is bait some swims with hemp and halibut pellets, 4 small bait droppers of hemp and 1 of small pellets in each swim then skin up as the best way to kick off a barbel swim is to leave it for at least an hour, if you got the patience after an hour put a couple more droppers in and wait for another hour. Leaving the swim like this gives any barbel in the swims time to get confidant on your beds of feed and will give you more chance of catching more than one fish from the swim.
You want be using 10/12lb line with a fast sinking braid hooklink, I use 12lb Drennan Sink Braid and fish a longish hooklink around 18 inches, fish a big halibut pellet on a hair rig on a size 10 strong hook, keep your rig simple, a simple running ledger will catch you plenty of barbel. This is how I fish most of the time and I catch plenty of fish. I only fish small rivers so can't really help you if you are fishing a big river like the Thames or Severn.
Ignore knocks and taps, you will know when its a barbel bite as the rod tip will bang over, don't leave your rods in the water unattended, if you do and you get a bite it will have your rod in.
If you do catch please make sure you get it back in the river as quick as possible and hold the fish with its head facing upstream until it kicks away, it will let you know when its recovered. Barbel are hard fighting fish and give their all in the fight and if you release them too soon before they have recovered they can go belly up and die. I had a nice double on tuesday night and ended up nursing it back to life for 10 minutes before it kicked away back into the river.
I am guessing your mate has done some barbel fishing so he should be able to help you setting up your rigs and stuff and also put you onto some fish.
Good luck matey, I really hope you get one, they are one of the hardest fighting coarse fish in the country and you will have a right scrap on your hands when you hook one, I guarentee you will get the bug and be back for more
Cheers

smaller barbel are the nuts on my river you know if the barbel is under around 6lb because they take off like a cat with a rocket up its arse

great sport on trotted float tatics The bigger barbs tend to pretend there sacks of wet cement hit bottom and plod around until the games up then wake up and try and take you water skiing.
