hi all,

1st grow now complete and all good but throughout cycle i had a fly infestation in soil that seemed to show itself shortly after filling pots.
kept problem under control with pest off and gnat off but never totally cured problem just seemed to slow them down for a few days.

anyway soil in question is biobizz allmix, did the job well but i'm sure the flys came from from it.
does anyone know a good alternative to allmix that may give me a pest free grow?

any info would help.
cheers guys. wink.gif

Fungas gnats seems to be the bane of many a compost grow.. I dont know weather it helps but I am getting some remarkable results with Plagron batmix... Not the most ethical of composts I know, but no flies tho..

plagron (expensive) should be good or you could make your own using OT's guide. Im not realy likeing J.A.B multipurpose with added john innes i dont think the texture is very good compared to allmix it seems to dense and i got lsf on my hashberry plants and im having trouble with tomato plants growing in it. Saying that the hashberry tasted realy realy good better than amsterdams best even i never treated the lsf and completely neglected them but that was some nice weed. so much compost available doesnt realy seem like the kind of quality you want for your babys. There are lots of threads about compost levingtons hanging basket and multipurpose used to get very good reviews i think untill they changed their formula to complete shit but it might be back to normal now.

Ive had fungas gnat problems for years with various different types of soil. Our area is always full of bugs and flies and they must come in from outside and think they will set up home in my grow.

The best thing i found for keeping gnats at bay is to keep the top part of the soil dry. Sticky traps or even better was a sticky plant trap, they seemed drawn to it and the plant loved the free food. I dont think you can ever get completely rid of them, i dont get many in my flowering area as the air exhange is too much for them and end up being sucked up into the fan smile.gif Just keeping their numbers down has a good impact. You could even try an electric fly catcher, that worked well for me too as they are drawn to the light.

homebase multi purpose had a good write up, it is somewhere here on uk420, i put 65% into my grow medium i add only 5% plagron, plus other stuff.

thanx again dudes,

i used sticky traps and they did work well with them and pestacides managed to keep numbers to a min but never totally got rid off them wink1.gif

also now gone for miracle grow multi purpose recommended by a few people and alot cheaper than biobizz allmix.
