Now we all know and despise fungus gnats, while they aren't anywhere near as destructive as many pests, well, they're just bloody annoying aren't they? And from what I can gather, if a fungus gnat is present then thier larvea are feeding on the fungus that is growing on your roots, fungus on roots can be a good thing, symbiotic relationships and all that, but i'm not so sure that the fungus in this case is beneficial, anyone care to correct me on that? unsure.gif

Anyway, the thing I found most interesting in this link was the little gem about sprinkling cinnamon on the soil surface, if it works (and the poster seems to believe so) then I have to say that's feckin' inspired!!! thumbsupsmileyanim.gif applause.gif

Has anyone else heard of this? If so, does it work?

I'm not so sure about drenching with peroxide, that sounds a bit extreme, I assume that this would also kill the microherd and any beneficial fungus too? Although, I am perplexed a little because I have read about using peroxide solutions in growing psilocybe mushrooms, so does peroxide kill fungi? or is it all down to the strength of the solution?

I digress, yet again...cinnamon, yes, that was the point wasn't it? doh.gif

I currently have only a very small gnat problem left, just a couple buzzing about, mainly through watering sparingly, I read this somewhere and decided to dessicate the little buggers, almost worked but they're not all dead yet!

I have some cinnamon around here somewhere so i'll be trying it out later, i'll let you all know how it goes.

nut
use sticky traps and cover soil i find rockwool used to be infested with nats once i cover the slabs i did not have a problem. they do not do any harm to the plants but if you grow in rockwool the green sludge on top will cut oxygen from getting to the roots and the use nutrients that the plant needs. cover the roockwool if you grow in it, use sticky traps they you can see how bad the infestation is and if you have any other nasty thing living in your room. i love yellow sticky traps well worth the few $£.

as a plant killer they are as good as most bugs, but what makes fungus gnats worse, you must have bad condition to get them in the first place. i suffered fungus and i got them but it was smelly bat guana that caused the gnats. they are under your soil breeding, they suck the life out of the roots.
