Hey guys I've got a small rvk fan for extraction but it's a little noisey so i'm looking to get a speed controller for it. I've seen a few around starting from around £30 going upto about £100 but i've no idea which one to get.
Can I get one of the cheap ones or ain't they very good? Are there any problems with the cheaper ones? Do they get hot or buzz a lot? What do all you guys use? Any links to the ones you recommend would be appreciated.
Peace

Most fan controllers make the fans buzz, including the expensive Primair which is not actually very suitable for controlling fans. The Airforce variac-based fan controllers are best, completely silent, but bulky. That's what I bought.

I'm glad this topic has come up.
I don't suppose you could tell me where I could find one of these "Airforce variac-based fan controllers" please squirrel?

Google "Airforce fan controller", that's what I did. There are several online growshops that sell them, though not Greens last time I checked. There are also threads on how to build you own in the design forums, see
this thread for example. And
this one. There are loads of threads on variacs.

It baffling really, I use two primair and no buzzing at all, which leaves me to think it is the fan make or model or the type of rvk one is using, if you place two pillows sown together over the fan it will reduce the noise by about 80 percent.
Failing that replace the bearings in the fan hence no sound at all from what iv read on here.

That makes sense, I have 2 x 150mm running on one primair with no problems and 2 x 200mm running on another primair again no problems.
Maybe it only happens as a result of using 2 x fans which are different in relation to size, for example a 150mm and 200mm, or 125mm and 150mm, 200mm and 250mm, as in unequal sizes.

Hey thanks for the advice guys,
I've had a look at the airforce controller but at £140 it's way outta my price range. The ebay shop that was recommended (fantronix) has lots but i'm really quite confused by them all. I'm thinking about one of the £25-£30 ones would that be suitable for a 100mm rvk? And how loud do you think the buzzing would be? Coz the point of me getting one is to reduce noise. My grow is in a bedroom directly above the living room and you can hear the fans if the TV isn't on. Will a cheap one do the job or can you tell me of the cheapest one that will?
Thanks everyone

IME the buzzing isn't too bad with the smaller fans, it's the bigger ones that buzz loudly with the cheap fan controllers.
I've seen the Airforce controller for £95, but I can't remember where.
