ive not m8 sad.gif but its something id like to try, fished for pike, carp, chub, barbel, greyling , but never had the opertunity to salmon fish!......what sorta tackle we looking at?..finer points if you dont mind cool.gif I like to fish as light as possible without the 'youll never land a fish on that string' senorio.

im really interested in some in depth tecniques, as ive a few m8s up north with salmon water at there disposal cool.gif

im not really into spinning which if memory serves me is a good lure for a salmon, anything you can recommend a bit more laid back?

I think you've named them all mate. Sadly UK river Salmon runs are dwindling due commercial estuary netting, pollution, etcetc.
kingjackrulz

ye spinning is preferred by a lot of salmon fishers in canada, although sometimes frowned upon in scotland as they prefer good ol' fly fishing!

as far laid back goes, on the boe i think we used roe one day in the netted bags that we simply cast in, let sink, then made a fire next to the river as we waited for the roads to start bending telling us theres a big'un on!, nothin much more laid back than that until ya do get one an half the best hour long fight of your life!

if the opportunity comes your way cookie take it cos in my eyes its one of the best activities a man can do (provided you've got a spliff or 2)

nowhere beats Canada (especialy fishing with that scenery around you wub.gif)

but i did have a go on River Ystwyth in Aberystwyth, Wales. it isnt best in england but its a challenging fish and realy fun. also River Derwent, in Cumbria (forgoten which town it was in) but that was amazing and from the amount of anglers i did see (zero lol.gif) its a unknown secret 0_o and i was there for 2 weeks (traveling between river Derwent and River Cocker in Cockermouth (thats just a name of a place ya dont forget lol.gif)

the dee, spey, and tay are all big rivers.try some smaller ones with good runs of salmon, the ericht near blairgowrie or the earn near crieff are both exellent and produce loads of salmon every year,my biggest last year from the ericht was 18 lbs on the fly (an experience i can tell you)took 30 mins to land, and returned safly to carry on the journey.please put tagged ones back.

i think the river tweed still has a couple more weeks left in this season
i think the prices range form about 30-70 pounds a day.

im soon to purchase a double handed fly rod, so that i can finaly get a chance to go salmon fishing next year.
as salmon fishing is something i have never done and would relly like to do

go and look at the .THE URBIAN FLYFISHER . good pics of salmon out of the river KELVIN in GLASGOW my local river wink.gif

Just the thread I was looking for wub.gif

I Love fishing salmon and steelhead (rainbows). I'm just trying to get the balls up to go out in -15*c weather for some killer steelies. I'm pretty lucky, my home river is the Notty, nottawasaga that runs through wasaga beach.

Bad news is, salmon fisheries are hurting worldwide not just locally. I'm pretty young but I remember fishing in the fall with my uncle and the fish being caught far more often. Ministry of Natural resources is observing the salmon runs all over canada and finding dwindling populations and smaller fish on average.

You guys have problems with sea lamprey over in the UK? If you haven't heard of them, theyre basically a leech the size of an eel, that lives in the same depths as salmon, they attatch themselves and feed much like leeches do to us. Anyways in the great lakes it's really hammered our salmon fishery sad.gif

the Tyne in England is a good salmon river as are some of the south west streams (Tamar, Teign, Camel) and wales' Usk is a good river too.

I'd say think outside the famous spots and legend's of the Spey/Tay/Tweed. for instance the Test in Hampshre has a mad sea trout run late in the year after the dry-fly stuff ends.

I'm really lucky I have within 20 minutes driving the following rivers
Thurso, Fross, Halladale, Strathy, Naver and Borgie
and 40 mins to the Helmsdale, first UK salmon this year, 30 mins after opening on January 12th
the first two days are free for anybody downstream from Kildonan Falls
this river produces upwards of 3,000 fish per year
they are all fly only but that's not a problem
I do guiding up here so if anybody's interested I can sort something out accomodation, permits etc
and I also guide for brown trout during the summer with float tubes
We also fish for sea-trout from the beach in July, for me this is the best fish bar none

if anybody wants more info i'm happy to help

take care

Thurso mate?Had a few fish from there as a kid,my cousin still has a croft up in Bettyhills ph34r.gif Biggest salmon I have had was 28lb,didnt rod-and-line it,gaffed it from the ice-rink pool in Durham City when I was a kid ph34r.gif Hopefully I have changed since those days, and am now treading a law abiding path wink.gif
Bad Penny.
I remember fishing around Helmsdale and Bonar bridge, beautiful parts of the country wink.gif

I was lucky enough to have fishing on my doorstep in Ireland .. 2 min walk to the river bandon in co cork......fished it every day I could
average a fish a day and would often do 4 or 5... mainly on fly (hairy mary) but shrimp (got them when out fishing for bass)which we
coloured with dye blue ,black or red... and of course worm on coloured water ...

a short hope away was a little secret of a river called the silver stream... most folks would walk by it with out a glance .. but this little
oasis (no wider than 15 feet in places) with pools just perfect for night fly fishing .... biggest sea trout was just short of 11 pounds..
and the place was alive with them .... just hundreds of bars of silver ..... bliss

but my fav river in Ireland is in Donegal ... fishing the fin high in the hills and moors .....just perfect ...
Bad Penny.
Sounds like heaven, one of the best sea-trout rivers in England was the Wear,I remember devouring the contents of Hugh Falkus book as a kid ph34r.gif

yeah I love his books ......his stuff on sea trout is great ....
Bad Penny.
His seatrout book was the definitive guide, helped me fill the freezer many times, oddest place I fished for game-fish was just outside srinagar in kashmir, the locals told me they were called snow-trout,fishing method was to cast weighted trebles into the pools and try and rip them out,the same method the locals used in Hong Kong to rip mullet from the shoals feeding on the crap pumping out of the sewage pipes unsure.gif
