Full Version: Tesco Organic

Hi

I have 2 Blueberrys away using Allmix but I decided to try a grow that has cost as little as possible. I was in Tesco the other week and picked up a 60ltr bag of "Organic Multipurpose Peat Free Compost" for £3.80. I'm putting a couple of LR2s in it and a couple in B&Q multipurpose too. When I was sifting throught the compost, I found what looks like chunks of verneered chipboard. The compost is supposedly made by New Horizon, but I can't see how compressed woodchip can be organic.

What do you think?

I think I'd take it back, and ask for your money back! If that's what Tesco class as organic, I'd give there organic food range a miss pinch.gif

Looks like it could be part of the wooden container they keep the compost in before bagging it up?, maybe that's a bit that's chipped off? unsure.gif

lol.gif Fair enough if tesco had told him to fuck off when taking it back, but otherwise a tad aggressive don't you think?

Stashmash
nope... trade descriptions act.
anyways, they would know if they was allowed to call it organic as it must comply by Eu regulations, tested etc etc.. So if if is chipboard(which is glued) then who paid who off? lol.gif

Just about sums Tesco up. Don't even bother taking it back mate, just bin it & go source some compost at a local garden centre.

i bought the same stuff on impulse russian.gif yesterday. so today i had a sneaky look in the bag before i put it on my tomatoes. lo and behold, white melamine winking at me from the dank smelliness !
needless to say , i shall be taking the nearly empty bag back for a full refund next time i'm down that way. and maybe calling customer services to see what their take on the subject is.
I Zimbra
i expect they got it from what the fly tippers have dumped on the land they buy up to stop the competition setting up to close to the money grabbin bastads

I just can't stop thinking about malt loaf now. With butter all over and even on the sides.
On another note, at our local recycling centre you can leave timber and chipboard etc - it wouldn't surprise me if Tesco took this stuff, airfreighted it to India for someone to file into a powder for 16 hours a day, 7 days a week then airfreight it back again. And put it in a green sack with a leaf logo or a flower or something. God, I love malt loaf.

I agree with Stashmash

Report it to the papers, think of all the other people buying that compost, assuming it is what Tesco claim it is.

£3.80 for 60 litres of organic compost is too cheap to be true.

Agreed, they probably thought we are dominating the food market that much that they can sell what we like and label it what they like, money grabbing fuckers, I would have to be close to starvation before i give them any money. They also have most of the clothing section made in third world countries where they pay them peanuts and it is almost like slave labour.

It was stated that one pound of every ten pound in the UK goes in there pockets, taking over, at the rate of growth they will simply buy out ever other supermarket chain and then no price war will be avalible to the consumer, then simply whack the price up due to no competitors.

You only have to look at Microsoft as one example of domination, people are feeding the lions.

Look into mechanical biological treatment facilities. They produce compost through anaerobic digestion tanks and these are filled with domestic organic waste.

I didn't think the resulting compost was high grade enough to be sold in Tesco's but perhaps it is and abit of non-organic waste slipped through.

I had the same problem with the New Horizon peat free compost who make this one

pieces of uncomposted chip wood with paint on i used it on a climbing honeysuckle about 3 years ago im still waiting for it to flower lol.gif

Well, I bought a B&Q bag of Peat Free Organic compost for my potted runner beans to find myself sifting out several large stones/rocks!! As if my garden doesn't have enough of that crap in it! Wouldn't insult my main ladies by giving them that cheap pooh though!

My goodness, even all the large supermarkets have got ideas from gritweed to bump up the weight! rofl.gif

Can't beat All Mix, although I hear 'Terra Proffessional Plus' is in competition, but it costs £4 more than All Mix on the 50 litres so I'll stick with what I think is best & works wonders for me wink1.gif

Yeah get them to run it as front page news!! rofl.gif

Sorry but doubt a newspaper is really going to care if you find a bit of wood in some soil.
Maybe if it was a chickens head, then that might get some publicity, but not wood.

If this stuff is made by the same firm who make New Horizons, then it's made by William Sinclair. Interestingly, they also make J.Arthur Bowers compost and have recently bought out Joseph Metcalf Ltd who make Gem composts (according to the Sinclair website).

Sinclair's seem big on using recycled organic material instead of peat and went into some joint venture with a firm called APEX who, according to their website,

QUOTE
...now supplies approximately 700 major outlets and many leading independent garden centres with Organic Garden Compost.

They also mention B & Q and Homebase as their customers... Stands to reason that Tesco have got in on the act too.

Edit: To make the quote work.

What?! I thought chipboard would be a great alternative to compost!
