Full Version: Any Type One Diabetics?

Hi Folks,

Just wondering if there are any type 1 diabetic tokers out there?
Its commonly known that green can cause the 'munchies' ie a mild lowering of blood sugar which is the root cause of the munchies. I have been a type 1 diabetic for over 30 years now and find that actually during heavy use of green I have to reduce my insulin injections just a little. Just wondering what other people with diabetes experience is? Thanks!

I'm not diabetic, but one of my mates is. From smoking and toking for a several years, complicated by his diabetes, his eyesight has diminished to near blindness and his kidneys have failed to the point where he needs dialysis (spelling?) every other day.

Hello mate..Im diabetic type 2

Was diagnosed last April with this and blame canna for it partly..sitting stoned most days and munching thro allsorts of sweet things and drinking loads of coke, basically just being a slob.

Ive lost alot of weight but still find it hard to resist some naughty food when munchies kick in. I still cant get used to eating because I have too and not because Im hungry and still have hypos at least twice a week..anything under 4.5 on my blood sugar and I get the shakes/sweats and sometimes angry....still toking tho! whistling.gif

Thats interesting.

Have been a type 1 diabetic myself for over 20 years, and I have never noticed weed affecting my bood sugar.

Apart from when I have the munchies and shove my face full of sweet food!!!

Would suggest keeping a close eye on your blood sugars if you do decide to cut your dose of insulin.

I have a little blood sugar meter thingy and weed does lower my blood sugar ... just a little ... depends on the weed/hash quality. It pops right back up after I eat. Never actually recorded the differences, just observed. I have read somewhere, probably on UK420, that THC can cause changes to islet cell in the pancreas and help with Diabetes Type 1 & 2 but I could also be dreaming, maybe.

Weed/Hash, 'Munchies' ... Most people seem to desire the High Energy type drinks which contain lots of sugar, in one form or another, and lots of caffeine ... then add the cravings for high carb Junk foods that the 'Munchies create in some people and it's easy to see how they become victims of Diabetes Type 2. Inactivity mixed with the High Energy drinks and high carb junk foods causes problems for many of us humans - we were not designed to cope with it.

I use honey, in tea, to fix my cravings for something sweet ... also 'lines' the throat and protects, a little, from the 'drying' effect of THC.

I'm a hidden diabetic, apparently been one all my life but only showed as being life altering around my 40s, on a mixture of insulins and medication.

Pain and stress puts blood sugars up as do steroids, never noticed much of a change whilst using mj, synthetic mj or sativex

the balance of blood pressure is enhanced with sativex lowering it both systolic and diastolic.

the sugary crap stoners like , replace with crudités and savoury foods.

eat a well balanced diet of 5 smaller meals a day, thus reducing the need to binge.

A family member has been type 1 diabetic for about fifteen years now. Her blood sugars are out of control, she hypos once a day on average. Nothing she does reliably gets it under control. However, several years ago, she took an ecstasy and her blood sugar stayed nailed to the 6.0 mark for eight hours solid. This was rather interesting, so she tried another E again several months later and same again: her blood sugar stuck at 6.0 mm/l. It's a very interesting observation; so does anyone else have this experience with ecstasy and steady blood sugar levels?
The Man Machine
that'll be because ecstasy is an amphetamine (of some kind) which releases adrenalin (or prevents it being sequestered (and thus inactivated) (forgotten which)) this in turn activates alternative pathways for release of sugar that don't require glycogen (releases sugars). I'm pretty sure it involves what would be classed as a stress response which is really not good for your body for loads of reasons (even if it were in a clinical setting) . still, fascinating stuff. one of my friends has type i and tokes, hope he doesn't fook himself.

Slihgtly off topic, but Type 2 Diabetics might be interested in, Raw For 30 Days 'an independent documentary film that chronicles six Americans with 'incurable' diabetes switching their diet and getting off insulin.'
