Hi,
Have had a Wii console for a few months now and despite reading various guides, I am absolutely stumped on how to connect it to my wireless internet.

I'm on Orange broadband with one of their wireless routers. It is set for a wired connection at present and I cannot even get in to the settings to unlock the network.

I'd be grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction......it's all alien2.gif to me.

Thanks in advance smile.gif

for mine i use a lan connection . as i dont use wireless. but i beleive it has a built in wi-fi connector that 'should' connnect to your wireless , have you tried searching for wireless devices on your Wii ???

żI presume that you mean that your router/modem has wireless capabilities, but that wireless is disabled on it at the moment?

If that's the case, then just by going to the router's setup page in your web browser (192.168.0.1 and 10.0.0.1 are common default addresses that they tend to use) you will be able to activate the wireless board in it, and be able to set the SSID, WPA encryption etc. from there.

If the router's password has been changed from it's default sometime in the past, and you can't remember what it was, then you will be able to return the router to it factory defaults usually by holding in a little 'Reset' button that's often recessed into the back of the case - this will make the username/password on the router the factory default, often U: admin P: admin or U:admin P:<blank>.

If you still can't suss it out from there, tell us what model router it is, and we'll go on from there. thumbsup.gif

My son recently had a couple of issues trying to get his PSP to connect to the net and in the end all it took was for us to enter the wireless ecryption code thingy in the PSP, but then our router was already set up for wireless connections.

Yeah - these wireless router/modems always come with wireless enabled out-of-the-box IME, and unless you've specifically turned it off in the router's control panel, it will still be active.

Usually with these ISP-supplied boxes, any encryption key it's preset to is usually on a sticker somewhere on the router's shell.

You should just be able to tell the Wii to attach to your router, and tap in the encryption key from the sticker, and off you should be able to go. thumbsup.gif

when i had the wii i plugged it in and it worked fine after i entered my WEP key it worked fine.

Go to the wii home menu, then options in the bottom left corner of the screen, then settings on the right

the go to page 2 (click the right arrow) > then internet > connection.

click connection 1 > click wireless connection > search for an access point, it will search and come up with a list of all available connections, click on your router.

it should now ask you for your WEP key, enter it and press ok.

it hould test the connection and give you an update option, click yes and let it update itself.

go back to system settings then Wii connect 24 and click yes and make sure thats switched on and click confirm.

you should now be ready to rock and roll wirelessly.

if that doesnt work then go to http://www.nintendowifi.com/ and check and see if your modem is supported by the wii.

you should also log in to your router and make sure it is switched on to send a wireless signal.

Hope that helps

It'd have to be a pretty obscure, wacky wireless modem/router/access point if it wasn't compatible with the Wii:

QUOTE
Choosing a Wireless Router

The Wii is designed to be compatible with most home wireless routers and security standards. While we do not have a list of specific supported routers, checking for the following features on a router can help ensure you pick one that is compatible with the Wii. Remember that you must have a highspeed Cable or DSL internet connection in order to connect your Wii online.

What to look for:
  • 802.11G/ 802.11B (or mixed)
Most routers currently sold offer these settings. Check the box to make sure the router supports these broadcast standards. Routers that mention 802.11N or pre-N (as well MIMO) may not be compatible with the Wii.

  • WEP and WPA/WPA2 encryption
The Wii is compatible with WEP, WPA and WPA2 encryption methods if you wish to enable wireless security on your router.

There are several different WPA variations. The Wii is compatible with:
  • WPA - PSK (TKIP)
  • WPA - PSK (AES)
  • WPA2 - PSK (AES)

Yeah, I turned the wireless function off when I installed the router.....I was worried about someone freeloading on my connection (pass me that tin foil hat mate).

I can't get in to the set up page on the router......tried every password I could possibly think of. Was thinking I'd have to speak to Orange, but the reset idea sounds easier.
Thanks for the info Scribble.

Thats great info too T1....thank-you.

Well, I'll have another go tonight when I get home and post either the success story or the fact that my head has entirely melted.

Ta everyone smile.gif

You'll be able to reset the modem to it's factory settings by holding in the reset button on the back of it - a piece of piss. thumbsup.gif
