Generally speaking, you'll usually get about a 50/50 ratio of males to females when you grow from seeds. So if you plant 10 seeds, you usually see an average of 5 females and 5 males. Buds only grow on females, so you ONLY want females unless you plan to get into breeding. As far as I know, feminized seeds come from breeders who try to make seeds with a higher Female to male ratio. I'm no expert on the subject, but I believe they use inbreeding and forced hermaphrodites(sp). I've heard some people prefer to stay away from so called "feminized seeds" to avoid the risks of bad genetics, i.e. females turning hermy. I personally have no clue if that's true. Maybe others here can vouch as to the reliability of feminized seeds.

I've bought feminized seeds, in fact I prefer them. I've never had one come up male and the only time plants went hermy on me was due to stress (which doesn't happen any more).

Basic guide to growing.

You plant seeds, grow them under Vegatative lighting which is 18 hours light 4 hours dark.

Some people use 20 hours light and 4 hours dark.

Some people use 24 hours light.

After 4-6 weeks you put them into flower, under 12 hours light and 12 hours dark. They will show their sex, you get rid of any males to grow weed without seeds, as the females won't be pollinated. This is called Sensimillia.

After the buds mature you crop, dry (and if you like cure)

Then you become a happy bunny. rofl.gif

Looks like you need to do alot of resarch, this site is great for that. Or get yourself a grow guide, very handy reading.
The grow diaries section would be a good place to start.
To answer the original question, some seed breeders produce female seeds, which are so you know you won't be growing males. They have their benefits, but some can produce bad plants, that can start out female, then turn out some males flowers (hermaphrodites) sp?

Best of luck.

if a male cannabis plant pollenates a female cannabis plant the female will produce seed. Females unpollenated will produce bud otherwise known as sensimellia.
Male cannabis plants are useful for breeding and developing new genetics. If you want Bud, first need an unpollenated female plant. Feminized seeds were created and marketed to these ends. Most people dont want male plants....

im devod: been growing some dutch pass feminised twilight, they were coming along brilliantly and was rubbing my fingers at some great smoking days ahead when i looked closly at some of the buds i saw loads of little banna sacks,
not three weeks from harvest. have spent ages pulling them out/stressing etc....

Moral of the story for me is dont try to cheat this system, dutch passions REGULAR euphoria seeds will be my next point of call: quality skunk smoke, big yields, 7 week flower time, reasonable price for seeds. Dammit i snese redemption for the dp seedbank.

Quite a few strains from what iv read with Dutch Passion have ended up hermi, the power plant seems to be one of the better strains which doesn't hermi, no hermies this end, 10/10 female, reading shit loads on these kinda strains it seems that allot end up hermi.

I forgot, I topped one plant which was power plant, this did hermi, only a handful of sacks on second week, removed this cluster of 5 sacks, although to be fair I wouldn't know a sack from a female seed.

Noticed allot that what I think is male sacks has infact produced female white hairs, guess I have so much to learn about strains, moral of the story if in doubt wait, plenty of time to determine which is which if you check daily.

Muppet, might have killed potential for lots more bud through paranoia, is miss reading.

Thanks for the comments, think ill just stick to the old fashioned seeds and hope i get some females. But am i better taking cuttings from one female or just using individual seeds? smoke.gif

personal preference really. but if you have cuttings why not use them? that way you're guaranteed females and you know what genetics to expect
