Its the fungas gnat larvae that have black heads

Sounds like springtails to me

If it's springtails it's prob due to watering too often.
Letting your compost dry properly in between watering should sort it
Owderb
Springtails isnt due to overwatering mate

They will have been in the compost to start

Its just wet mediums are a good habitat for them

It wont mate...trust me,once in they are virtually impossible to get rid of

Keep them under control and they shouldnt do too much damage

There are a few root drenches available but ive never used them myself

i stand corrected

i had them a couple of times, watered less frequently and it seemed to dramatically reduce the numbers.
lots of dead ones in the run off

Had them a few times over the years.
Hard to eradicate but they'll not kill your plants unless you let them really get outta hand
A quick spray of Buzz Off usually keeps em under control man.
A few light sprays onto the compost crust will do no harm @ the moment.
Just be glad you spotted them now while you can still spray.

I have had springtails in all my grows and never had a problem with them - (except when i look at them under a microscope and they make me itch alien2.gif)
Besides, i have heard that they are a sign of good biological activity in the soil biggrin.gif

Couldn't he repot if he has only just started flowering with same compost just a different batch, would that solve it.

Just a thought, people say no repotting in flower but just started flowering so surely would be ok?
