Full Version: New Scrog Box

My previous grows have all been in adapted wardrobes and have never had the success I could have had, due to the ventilation, lighting & positioning of the room/drobe.

Since moving house I have now started to build my own purpose built Scrog box and aim to document this on here as it develops into a working box.

So far I have the box built, and aim to have the lights & fans fitted in the next week.

Here it is so far . . .

The cab measures at 2ft x 1ft x 3ft.

For the lighting I plan on using 6 x 25w 6500k CFLs for vegging and move them up to 6 x 30w 2700k CFLs for flowering.
My lights will be placed on the shelf which can be moved in height.

The fan for intake will be either a 120mm or 80mm and an exhaust of 120mm.

Any ideas or comments about the box/lighting/fans are welcome and appreciated.

Nice start, I plan to make something about that size, perhaps just a touch taller. I will be interested to see your progress. Good luck!

Managed to get the lighting set-up in there today, (with help from the uk420 forums) but still waiting on my bulbs arriving.

Fans are on their way too so should be up and running soon hopefully.

Getting right back into that growing mood again now, soon I'll have something to check on again each morning that isn't email or post!

cfl's? really, youve got to be kidding. youre gonna be running around 600 watts for a tiny foot print. you'd be better off buying a 400 or 430 watt hid setup. it would generate less heat, require less power, and provide more lumens.

worried about heat? here is your solution. buy 2 90d 150mm duct corners, and drill out the necessary holes on the side of your box. buy a light tube, and setup your light in the very middle of the tube in the box. attach duct peices. place a simple 150mm/6" duct fan on one side, with a simple filter on the end, and push air over the light, out the other side of the box. if the room the box is contained in has a simple floor or ceiling fan, the box can be kept reasonably cool (between 76-80d fahrenheit) without having to adjust the thermostat.

6 x 30w Cfls, would that not be 180watts ?

I have a 250w HPS that I used to use, but always had heat problems.

From seeing someone with a similar set-up to my new one, I thought the small box/cfl route might be better for me.

I got the bulbs the other day and the temp went up to about 35C, my fans arrive on Friday (2 x 120mm).

I read somewhere that it would be best to use these both as exhausts, as opposed to 1 intake and 1 out. Is this right ?

Should both of these acting as exhausts bring my temperature down into a suitable range ?

180 watts for all that space? i wouldnt do it. if i was gonna run cfl's, id use 100 watt so i can get a decent amount of lumens. and with that setup, id either make the lights moveable, or id run a ScrOG setup. and if youre going to run ScrOg, study and educate yourself about both ScrOG techniques, and how to properly "train" plants.

if you use a light tube to put your light into, then push air or pull air over the light, you wont have heat problems that cant be very easily fixed by either adding fans outside of the box to ensure intake air temp is low, to compensate for the 250 watt heater that is now being operated, or simply turning the thermostat down. (hid lights are heaters)

the fans; think about it, if both fans are pushin in, how can you control air flow going out? heat rises, so you want to evacuate that air, causing cool air to rise in the box, allowing even cooler, more dense air to then fill the bottom of the box. in a small box like that, for odor control, id simply run ono gel near my evacuating fan. id also make sure i had negative pressure in the box. you do this by having more air exiting then going into the box.

your box is good, but cfl's are going to leave you wanting more from your plants.

Read the guys thread....the title is new SCROG box, and in his first post he says the light array will be adjustable.

Watching with interest collie-man...

Watching with interest. Im just in the transition from a 5ft tall x 2ft deep 280w CFL powered drobe to 5ft tall x 4ft deep 500w HPS Scrog drobe. Interesting to see how you get on. Good Luck M8.

You could fit 2 125w envros in their with ease, plus some of the regular CFL's. You get a much bette return. Just an Idea.

Many thanks for the replies,

So will this be best to have both fans extracting the air ?

The fans arrived on Friday but I'm away from home until Wednesday, so I'll be fitting those and getting the seeds on to germinate.

If the two fans alone can't handle the heat I will fit another or find a larger extraction.

Cheers, Cal.

I've now got my fans and lighting in there !

I went for 2 x 120mm exhausts in the end. And there are 6 x 30w 6500k CFLs up top.

Would it be best to drill in a few small intake holes now ?

The fans are amazingly quiet !

notts.pots
good shit collie man. personaly i would of put an intake at the bottom and the ex` on the opposite side at the top, but still all good. my next setup will be pretty much the same, at the minute im using a 125w enviro in a make-shift cardboard box lol.gif . all the best mate.

e2a: if your going to drill holes make sure they wont let light in on lights out wink.gif
collie_man
Cheers notts,

Would having an intake fan at the bottom help cool the room better than having two exhausts then ?

How do you handle your heat in the cardboard box ?

bazza82
nice scrog box collie man smoke.gif ,very neat and tidy, look forward to seeing your plants in there in full flow yinyang.gif

the cool air falls and so will pull in cool air, then hot air is blown out as it rises.
as i just banged mine together the day my light arrived i didnt really plan it, but as it did used to get quite hot, i cut a 5 inch hole in the top and now it has a chimney lol.gif
collie_man
Ok wicked,

I'll swap the bottom one round later on then and see what temps I get that way.

Seeds should hopefully be ready to go in there tomorrow.
collie_man
Swapped the bottom fan round and temps came down from 31 to 24.

Good bloody work !

good job! you cant complain about 24c cool.gif

Nice to see the progress, hopefully we see some growing soon smile.gif
collie_man
Yeah hopefully !

Never had to wait longer than 3 days for my seeds to germ.

I've had 3 early girl seeds germing the paper towel way for 5 days, nothing still.
And 3 Safari Mix sat in water for 3 days.

Both are in the dark airing cupboard.

Any ideas, or just to sit tight and wait ?
whazzup
I usually just put them in a pitpot without soaking. Right temperature? 23 C? If the seeds are very fresh or very old it may take a while. When the seeds are very fresh you just wait, they can take a bit longer. A trick with old seeds is to just touch them a bit with a piece of fine sandingpaper before soaking them.
collie_man
Cheers whazzup,

Yeah I read that yesterday on here about sanding them down a little. I did that with the 3 Safari Mix but those seeds are the oldest I have.
Nothing on those yet.

I also had 2 Skunk Special from femaleseeds.nl, I chucked one of those in yesterday cos I don't hold much hope for any of the others.
That's sat in bottled water, in the dark at a steady 24c. It sunk after 12 hours so I'll be keeping my eye on it today.

I was off to get some AK-48 Nirvana seeds today.
I'm in two minds how to germ these. I've always used the paper-towel method and never had any problems, until this grow.
But a lot of people have recommended the glass of water method to me recently.

Any suggestions ? Which do you prefer ?
Troubled Mind
I prefer towl method, , But thats mainly because I always forget to check the seeds and 3 days later there fucked, lol.gif.

But the glass water way is surposed to be better for germ rates.

hows it coming on m8, decent set up there, where did you get your fans from?

The fans were all from ebay, about £2 each, powered by a 3-12v variable adapter. Also about £2 each.

Here they are at the moment . . .
