Full Version: Firefox Search Addon For Uk420
UK420 > Cannabis Culture > Smokers Lounge > Computers, Games and Internet
Pages: 1, 2
Scribb|e
Sometimes the UK420 'Search' function can be a bit clunky for searching the site, especially when you're trying to search for something less than 3 characters long, or when you're trying to do complex searches with + and - and other search terms.

I've written a Search Bar addon for Firefox that allows you to search all of UK420 using Google, but from the convenience of the Firefox Search Bar - all you need to do is download the uk420.xml file below, and for Windows users, just copy and paste the file into the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins directory, in Linux (Ubuntu, anyway, I'm sure that most other distros will be the same) paste into /usr/lib/firefox/searchplugins.

Here's what it looks like installed: Click to view attachment

Get the file here: Slinky (Right-click on the 'uk420.xml' link & 'Save As' to your hard-drive)

For anyone who's paranoid about using Google to search UK420 (and this is being mightily paranoid, IMO ph34r.gif), I have written one that uses Scroogle instead (which scrapes Google for their searches, and they don't keep search-term records and delete all their access logs within 48 hours) - even better it uses Scroogle's SSL (https) interface so that all search queries will be encrypted as well, so not even your ISP will be able to monitor any searches you make while using it. guitar.gif

Same installation instructions apply as with my original Google one:

Windows users, just copy and paste the file into the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins directory.

Linux Firefox users should paste into /usr/lib/firefox/searchplugins

Linux Swiftweasel3 (a totally FOSS build of Firefox, optimised for your specific processor architecture) users should unzip it into /usr/local/swiftweasel3/searchplugins

On Mac OSX, it should be one of the following paths: /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/searchplugins or
/Applications/Mozilla.app/Contents/MacOS/searchplugins

I hope that someone finds this useful.

¡Enjoy!

Hi Scribble I've just installed it and it works very well and it has already proved useful. As you mentioned it lets you search for words/phrases that are less than three characters, really good. Thanks. Hh. yahoo.gif

Top notch cheers scribble thumbsup.gif

well played scribble, mate, thisll be really handy for people who want to search for "pH" for example...

i'll have to see if i can install it on my mac, i guess it should be straightforward.

thanks dude! yinyang.gif

now if only you could get the hang of seeding on oink. lol.gif tongue.gif wink1.gif
iamafunkimunki
how do install it? i've saved it to my program files in firefox plugins. and nothings happened. excuse the poor computer skills yinyang.gif
Scribb|e
Once the file's in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins - you should then be able to use the UK420 search by clicking on the Firefox Search Bar icon, and then the little canna leaf with 'UK420' next to it should be selectable - just click on it, and then any searches you put into it will search UK420. thumbsup.gif

MU - (124)(34) & (258)(80) and still not a peep on those two - I get the feeling it's not coz of mega-seedboxen, you know... unsure.gif

yinyang.gif

yeah its a pain isnt it... as ive said before, oink doesnt take any notice of your share ratio until you go over 5GB downloaded, my best advice is to download lots and lots of small files (like albums and ebooks and small apps) up to 4.8ishGB in one go, and then let that lot seed until you get a 1+ ratio. it worked for me mate in a matter of 8 weeks id downloaded over 10GB with a 1+ ratio. its really the only way to do it. DO NOT DOWNLOAD BIG FILES! play the numbers game mate, not all torrents have seedboxes, so you'll seed back maybe 5+ on one torrent and nothing on another torrent... if you've got say 70 torrents in your client, you're gonna seed something. thats the only advice i can give you. download lots and lots of small files.. like mp3 albums at 100MB each for example... ive downloaded some German Courses and theyre seeding back really well. avoid FLAC until you have built a good buffer because FLAC music are large files usually, stick to mp3 albums, apps, elearning, audio books and you'll get there.

the logic's pretty simple. the more torrents you've downloaded = more torrents you have to seed = higher probability of seeding.

trying to build your ratio one file at a time is going to take you months and months of frustrating hard work.

go on a downloading spree, but stay under 5GB total downloaded, and then seed everything youve got. i only delete oink torrents from azureus when they get deleted from the tracker.

anyway, this thread isnt about oink, sorry to go off topic...

Yup - just downolad the Ubuntu Desktop install CD from www.ubuntu.com and boot your PC with it - if it's a PC that already had Win on, it will guide you through the procedure of installing Ubuntu on a separate partition for itself, and automatically set up a dual-boot menu for you. wink1.gif

You can always also just use the Ubuntu CD as a 'live' Linux version - you can just run it from the CD drive, not installing to the hard-drive (or affecting it) in any way - it's pretty slow running it like that, but it does allow you to try out Ubuntu without changing anything on your PC, saving booting from the CD drive.

thumbsupsmileyanim.gif Cheers mate i think theres a new one available today as well spliff.gif

any chance of a new link to the search addon scribble? great idea by the way

oops my mistake, i shouldnot of skipped to the end of the thread, great idea scribble, shall check it out
Scribb|e
No worries - I had to rehost it somewhere else as the original link to the bitbucket I used expired after, oh I don't know, 10 minutes or something. 34.gif

I'll see if I can get Joolz to host it on the UK420 server somewhere - that'd be the ideal solution, I reckon.

Hope you get some good use out of it - if you have any problems or questions about it, don't hesitate to let me know. thumbsup.gif

yinyang.gif

e²a: Another idea, short of Joolz uploading it to UK420's server would be to move the replacement link to the file to my original 1st post, so that ppl can find it straight away rather than ppl having to scroll about in the depths of the thread to find it.

theres a good dual booter called Acronis OS Selector.
Scribb|e
¿Err that's nice - does it have anything to do with the FF Search Plugin? unsure.gif

yinyang.gif
Scribb|e
¡ARRGH - it's expired again!

I've re-upped it here.

yinyang.gif
Greenthumb_420
Shite, tried three times to get this working... not once! Do you need to restart el 'puta?
Scribb|e
Nah - just restart Firefox is all.

You just have to copy the UK420.xml file to the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins directory, restart FF and then off you go.

¿Have you clicked on the Search Bar icon at the left of the bar which will reveal the drop-down menu giving you the choice of which search engine to use? The UK420 has a little picture of a weed leaf on it instead of the Google 'G' logo.

what version of firefox are you running??
Scribb|e
Started with 2.something.earlier, and have used it throughout all upgrades - now on 2.0.0.9, and using it under Win and Linux systems.

yinyang.gif
CinderellaMan
If it isnt there, try right clicking on your firefox toolbar and click customize, brings up a box of things you can drag onto your toolbar, search function being one of them.

It took a while for me to find but its all up and running fine.

dreadman
is there a mac version available?
Scribb|e
I don't really 'do' Macs, but from what I can gather, if you copy the UK420.xml file here:

QUOTE
On Mac:

/Mozilla/searchplugins/

On Mac OS X:

/Applications/Mozilla.app/Contents/MacOS/Search\
Plugins/

It should work OK. thumbsup.gif

Ive done everything explained and I still can not get it to work. How is the file installed? If I doubleclick it, IE comes up and says;

"The XML page cannot be displayed
Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

A string literal was expected, but no opening quote character was found. Error processing resource 'file:///C:/Program File...

Look at my very 1st post in the whole thread : you have to compy the .xml file to your Firefox Plugins directory. thumbsup.gif

Hmm, seems like the ZIP file attached to the 1st post contains a version of the XML file that has become corrupted, somehow.

Click to view attachment <- Here is a known good copy, just unZIP and follow the instructions I gave in the 1st post in this thread. thumbsup.gif

QUOTE
