Linux question

I'm a Linux user and have been for years. I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and now YouTube etc. videos cannot be displayed. I have tried installing various codecs, reinstalling Flash and even messing about with my Nvidia drivers and so far no luck. Anyone have any Ideas?

I have, several times. I think that I'm going to try a full reinstallation from disc now and see if that does the trick. Thanks for your reply though.

Fuck proprietary shit like Flash. I have been able to do with out it installed for years, and whilst there are shortcomings they can invariably be worked around, and IMHO the upsides of not having the system that presents the most annoying things on the web offset the inconveniences of working around not having Flash.
Plus the privacy increases by not having Flash around is good too. Its security track record is rather appalling too - be glad you aren't trying to get the POS going on Windows!
For the BBC iplayer I use get_iplayer (with the "illegal" version of rtmpdump that breaks the farcical DRM), for Youtube I use youtube-dl, and recently when I wanted something off Soundcloud I found a script called soundcloud.sh and was able to download what I needed.
Many sites that use Flash for presenting audio and video often have the URL for the audio/video data in the web page's source. That URL can be used to simply download the stream instead, or the URL can be copy/pasta'd into whatever program you want to use. I tend to use MPD for audio streams and mplayer for video.
I have no problem though with rejecting the use of web based applications, and much of what industry tries to push people towards these days. Whilst the making of computing and computers easier to get into, easier to maintain, stuff like that, is empowering for the user, by people using applications (and storing their data) on computers that are not totally under their control they are massively empowering centralised entities, and I feel long term those entities will use their amassed power against the users. Likely repetition of the same shit that has happened in IT in the past, locking users into products and services and milking them for all they are worth.
Well, fuck that. I stick to stuff that doesn't have the scope for abuses. FOSS provides that.

After using Synaptic Package Manager, my first port of call was the Ubuntu Forums, which TBH are not actually all that helpful.

I have tried using different browsers (FireFox and Chromium) as well as non proprietry software like Gnash and LightSpark too, and so far nothing seems to fix the problem. I totally agree with you in general about Flash and it's security issues etc. but I guess I've been a little lazy on that front.
I do just download things I want to watch, but it's irritating not being able to see YouTube etc. videos posted on forums such as here.
Thanks all for your input though.

Yup, I realize that I have the beta, I know other people who have had no issues with it though. Which is what is so annoying about the whole thing!
Thankfully I use partitioned and external drives for all of my data, so although it's going to be irritating I can just go back to 11.04 as I hace it on disc.
I've never used Pinguy, is it any good then?
