Hehe, I'm in two minds about Pattaya. On the one hand it's not at all what I travel to South East Asia for-the 'English' pubs, mass tourism, the seediness etc. On the other hand, I have friends who live near there and every time I visit Thailand I feel obligated to spend a few days visiting, and I've had some truly unforgettable nights there.
It is what it is, go, enjoy it for what it is and prepare to have your mind blown! Seriously, some of the things that go on in the bars there are just insane, even by Thai standards! Definitely worth experiencing once I'd say.
It's not as cheap as a few years back mind, be prepared to splash some cash if you do go on a bender as some places (go-gos and clubs) are charging 100-150 baht for a beer and 200+ for spirits nowadays, and that's before you even buy a lady drink or consider paying a bar fine! (And it is really hard not to when there are 30 naked women dancing around for the taking.
Gets to much for me after a few days though, the catcalls and the decrepit old sex pests shuffling about start to get right on my tits and I need to GTFO of there!
E2A I'd also steer well clear of any drugs there, including weed, as it's pretty on top in that regard, especially if you don't know anyone.

You saw me
As you said,Pattaya is what it is,sodom and gommorah to the Nth degree, the allure pales after a while,I know a couple of guys in Jomtien and drop in there sometimes but but I am well past trawling the soi's,its been described often enough as adult-disneyland,I would reccommend a soapy-massage just for the experience but theres a lot more to LOS than its flesh-pots

Most definitely, so many really great places to visit in Thailand, the red light areas are just one aspect of a really great country to visit.
Slightly off topic but just a quick heads up to those who may be interested: Google maps have just launched Thailand streetview on Friday if you fancy a peek at what it's like. They've uploaded Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket so far. Some decent streetviews of some villages and mountains north of Chiang Mai uploaded too.

I didn't like Nana, full of 'women' with big feet, I was back on that sky train before you could say 'English?'.

Im gpoing to try and avoid Pattaya this time, although its their first time whos coing with e and want to see the sights
Koh Samui is really expensive in my opinion, Prefered Koh chang.
Although pattaya isnt everybodys cup of tea, its good for action, like clubbing etc, and its good to get to places from there.
Best place ive ever been to in my opinion. you wont regret it

Fair play mate, some excellent riding up there. I'm not a dirt biker, but did the Mae Hong Son loop AKA the "Road of 1864 bends" a while back, makes for a fantastic road trip.

I'm not saying that I have any grand pronouncement on the whole thing, just that I find it really sad and grim.

It's an economic choice for many sex workers, a choice between working in the rice fields/factories for 150 baht a day, or lying on their back for 1000baht a day plus. It's a tough choice for many, but a choice nonetheless, they're not indentured sex slaves. The majority of Thai women choose to not take the easy option and find legitimate low paid work, some don't and take the "easy money" option.
It's complicated, but there are shades of grey in everything. For me personally, it's the entire society to blame for allowing their sons and daughters to be exploited by sex tourists, and their country to become known as the whorehouse of the world. I find the corruption that enables and perpetuates the industry, and the families who knowingly profit from sending their kids to fuck for money, far more depressing.
