I got my first DSLR last week and i'm very interested in this kinda photography. I went out yesterday to a shopping mall to take some snaps, got my camera out, snapped one shot and got thrown out by a jobsworth security guard.

This is the second incident in a week, the first one was at a basketball court, some guy threatend to smash my camera up if i took any pics.

Anyone else have these issues?

this is the only pic i took in the mall of someone.

Street photography is cool but I ain't taking my camera onto the streets of London lol ,

Some peeps black masking tape up the logos on the camera bodies.

Rain street photography B&W is my fav & urban fog day or night but night looks futuristic.

Trendy places/streets are good places I've read, as you get pretty people strolling along who don't mind so much.

Smile and ask to take people photos first.

Thanks Mr M, some good tips. Although i think it can ruin a shot once the subject is aware. having said that, it takes some balls to get good candid shots, especially on a short lens close up.

Learn to shot from hip but still smile if they see you looking lol ,

Set your camera up so its focused on anything over say 7foot manually with as much dof as you want and practice hip shots.

Say 35mm at like f14.3 gives me a sharp depth of field from 4.7' to 13.7'...

Depends on lighting obviously though.

What lens are you using and what body?

cool.
it's only a 18-55mm kit lens on a 20D. would like a longer lens though.

e2a: it's a big step up from a cybershot point and shoot :hippy:

Cool dude, I would try a 22mm focal length which with crop sensor is about a 35mm and an f9 stop focused about 7' away.

Everything from 4' to 27' will be focused, then play with shutter speed for exposure.

Asking peoples permission can be key when taking pictures but some cultures don't like it, thats when shooting from the hip or chest works well.

Try and see if you can download a programme channel 5 aired late last year called 'How to take stunning pictures.' One of the shows focused on street photography and it should be right up your street.

Putting people in prison for taking drugs is like breaking their legs for not wearing a seatbelt.

The hard on drugs, war on drugs approach has been discredited for a very long time and it's sort of pathetic to see old men still trying to re-live those primitive battles - Prof. David Nutt

Keeping your eyes open and alert with your camera at the ready helps, a second or two later this lady hurriedly dragged her child out of shot.

Took this first picture on the most crowded bus in morocco, just before an old dude went a bit mental at me in Berber for stealing his soul, or something. These kids had just been for a haircut and wanted to see their new do's in the viewfinder. Showing people how they look and offering to email the picture to them goes down well.

The next was another one of those that wouldn't have been there a second later.

Its a strange one for me, I love candid / street style photography, but its one of the very few things that embarrasses me when caught lol..god knows why as im not taking pervy shots or doing anything wrong??.. just think Im transfferring my own dislike of having my photo taken onto my subjects :S..

anyhow, heres one of the few I took in thailand (Kao San road)
