its getting near the time when those of us with open fires think about lighting them ..so heres a simple solution which weve been using for many years now ..you will need to go to a cheapo pound shop and buy a couple of large candles ..we got ours for 50p for 4 big uns

then you will need a bit of wood and either a stanley knife of a little plane

and finally cake casings and cotton wool

1st get your wood and plane /whittle off as much as you can making longish strands of wood shavings
2nd melt down the candle (only do one at a time )
3 whilst thats melting lay out your cake cases (double them up )
4 scrunch the shavings into a ball for each cake
get a small dob of cotton wool for your wick

now put the shavings into into the cases and gently pour half a case full of the melted wax into them then just pop a blob of cotton wool on top et voila a firelighter that will burn for a good 15 minutes ..you only need one to light a fire so they work out very cost effective

for an hours work you can make enough to last the winter out ..when we used to use firelighters we would need 3 or 4 to get a fire going ..not with these we dont though :spliff:

Clever - neat. :yep:

¿You didn't find a way to incorporate the PedEgg shavings into this particular invention then? I would imagine that they would maybe provide an interesting aroma dimension to your homely hearth. :v:

Pinecones work amazingly well as firelighters, if you can wrestle one or two off the local squirrels...

aye ..they work well when dunked in candle wax too ..we tried them last year ..lovely smell to them as well ..but this year weve not really been foraging for woodland goodies ..normally we`d have a few branches /kernels and assortment of forest debris in our garden ..must get out soon and load up

Nice idea, and if you want to be really efficient you will get rid of your open fire and get a cast iron stove installed. there not that expensive and you get a lot more heat of of them :)
