My apologies if this has already been posted.
Cannabis 'may be linked to cancer' pa.press.net Frequent use of cannabis may be linked to testicular cancer, according to a new report. The study showed marijuana use was a significant risk factor for the disease. The US research discovered that being a marijuana smoker at the time of diagnosis was associated with a 70% increased risk. It was particularly elevated (about twice that of those who never smoked marijuana) for those who used the drug at least once a week and/or who had long-term exposure to the substance beginning in adolescence. The results also suggested the association with marijuana use might be limited to nonseminoma, a fast-growing testicular malignancy which tends to strike early, aged between 20 and 35, and accounts for about 40% of all cases. Researchers were prompted to check an association between the drug and the disease when they realised that since the 1950s the incidence of the two main cellular subtypes of testicular cancer, nonseminoma and seminoma - the more common, slower growing kind which strikes men in their 30s and 40s - had increased by 3% to 6% in the US, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and marijuana use had risen accordingly. Author Stephen Schwartz, an epidemiologist and member of the Public Health Sciences Division at the Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre, said: "Our study is not the first to suggest that some aspect of a man's lifestyle or environment is a risk factor for testicular cancer, but it is the first that has looked at marijuana use." Established risk factors include a family history of the disease, undescended testes and abnormal testicular development. The male reproductive system naturally produces a cannabinoid-like chemical that is thought to have a protective effect against cancer. The authors speculate that marijuana use may disrupt this anti-tumour effect, which could be an explanation for the possible link. The researchers interviewed 369 men in the Seattle-Puget Sound area, aged 18 to 44, who had been diagnosed with testicular cancer, about their history of marijuana use. For comparison purposes they also assessed marijuana use among 979 randomly-selected age and geography matched people without the disease |

What a load of bollocks. No pun intended How can they write this and then ignore anything saying that cannabis is in fact an inhibitor of cancer cells? Maybe the guys they tested smoked tobacco, too..or just had really bad lifestyles or a family history of testicular cancer.. The doctors were blatantly Daily Mail editors.. |

Nice scare tactic. Smoke weed and you don't get any play!
A lot of people out there will stop smoking of get all paranoid about smoking weed now (because they are stupid) and will probably do something like start smoking meth and robbing banks....Yay. Gooooo government! -------------------- |

I think they will also find that in the same timeframe, background radiation so called 'safe levels' have been steadily adjusted upward, all over the planet and everybody has been exposed to a multitude of industrial chemicals on many vectors to our lives as well as counts of stella and cosmic energetic particles penetrating our magnetosphere have also increased.
But no, can't possibly be anything associated with the rise of energetic radiation increases or carcinogenic industrial chemicals the most of us are exposed to, in greater or lesser degrees, in some form or another. Has to be the evil Cannabis. Freakin typical or what, like nobody knows what is causing most of the cancer rate increases. Dodgy research funded by those who have vested interest in Cannabis prohibition imo, there's enough of them funding this crap all the time for prohibitionists to point at. As far as i'm concerned, modern life is frickin carcinogenic, that's the world we live in, the past 60 odd years or so especially, so why should i be bothered even if it is true, nobody can avoid things which are causal to cancers, nobody, we are all exposed to carciongenics so why should i especially avoid weed because it may cause me testicular cancer, may do, oh wait, i'd better stop going out during the day and breathing and eating as well, just in case i get cancer from particulates in the air or from stella energetics or chemical contamination somewhere in the food chain, like durrrrrrrrr. Paxus. [Wonder how many of those in the study were asked if they were also kicked in the nuts at some point as well as if they used Cannabis, that'll do it as well. Scenario... Clean living life for 30 years, no Alcohol or puff or anything, goes round to see a mate, plays footie with mates kids in back garden and accidentally gets kicked in nuts by kid missing the football, 15 years later needs left testicle removed because of carcinoma growth. About risk using Cannabis, quite a few things can give us guys cancer there!] This post has been edited by Delta2012: May 31 2009, 07:09 PM |

QUOTE The US research discovered that being a marijuana smoker at the time of diagnosis was associated with a 70% increased risk. This is scientifically meaningless. Please go and speculate about how to do science properly. Edit: attribution.
