Many moons ago & several houses ago I had a 250W single plant grow going in a cupboard, I had an extension lead running to the cupboard & it was plugged into a 3kW rated timer. I was at week 7 of flower & needed to go away for work for a week so I left my gf at the time to water the plants for the week, there had been no problems with any of the equipment, especially the timer & all was looking good. Well, right up until the Friday night when I was flying back home anyway.
All the way back from my weedless work trip all I could think about was harvesting & having a decent smoke! I pulled up in the taxi to find the street rather more busy than before which was strange for 8am on a Saturday morning & the first thing I could think of was that I had been busted! As I was dragging my suitcases up the road one of my neighbours came up to me & told me that I really didn't want to go into my house & that I should pop into hers for a cup of tea, she never said why. From the front everything appeared OK, but as I was soon to find out, my house had burned down to a crisp inside & all the back windows were blown out!
Luckily my faithful dog knew something was up that night & she managed to wake my gf in time for her to get herself & my baby out safely, She saved their lives! All this happened around 5am!
My house was gutted out, I returned to get rid of the illegal evidence the follwing day despite still being in shock & the house being condemned! The picture I saw was heartbreaking, my house, my belongings, my photos, my keepsakes all destroyed & everything was tarred black & smelt sickly! After breaking into tears about what I had done & what could have happened I treaded carefully up the stairs, they were caved in & burned to a crisp! I ripped out the melted grow related stuff & got rid of the plant, which amazingly enough was still standing, but totally bald & black!
The report did not determine the cause of the fire, but it did determine the approximate starting point, which was the socket my timer was plugged into. Everything in that room was detroyed. Apart from some broken glass on the floor & a bent up metal box there was no evidence at all that I had my computer, a 17" large old school CRT monitor, hifi etc in there that were all on a large computer desk! It is incredible the damage fire can do!
I obviously had to move out into rented accomodation while everything was being re-built, it took around 10 months for the work to be done. The house was worth around £50k at the time & the work cost £38k plus around £20k for furniture, valuables etc! Lucky I was insured!
I never grew for another 8 years or so depite the fact I refused to admit that it was my grow that caused the fire for most of that time as the fire did not start in the cupboard, but the timer is what caught fire & that was in the other room & was destroyed without trace by the fire!
Sorry if I have worried anyone but these things really do happen, I know first hand & strongly recommend that no corners are cut when it comes to these things.
There is no subsitute for a contactor, there is much much more that 3kW of load on the ballast at turn on which requires a much heavier duty relay, which is what a contactor consists of.
Please be safe
