After a few months experimenting with home made hydro systems, I have perfected the design (as far as im concerned). Here is a step by step guide to building a DIY hydro system. It is very easy to make and produces the same results as shop bought ones.

Some things still need to be bought from hydro shops, I have included a link to spams site. There are other suppliers of the same things. I am not responsible if you order from them and it goes wrong

First you will need a plastic container, like this one here. Make it as big as you want, this will hold about 30 litres.

I bought mine from staples and cost about £7.

Next, get a plant tray like this one... This one has been in good use for a while, dont spose it will matter much... I will clean it later

They cost about £5 from all good garden centres

Cut one end out like this so that the water can run out

Next you need to make some legs for one end of the table, I have used short pieces of aluminium pipe. You can use anything you want really, wood, plastic as long as it is fairly strong.

Here is where they are going to sit, I have put them in place so I can mark where to drill holes...

I have drilled holes in the legs and the seed tray and attached the leg with bolts and butterfly nuts.

I needed to use some washers on the bottom screw to hold the legs straight (the tray has slanting sides)

Now you need a pump, get one from the garden centre again.. The smallest pond pump they have should be more than enough...

The pump I have here is really too big, but it can be restricted

A cheap pump should be about £10

Put the pump into the box, put it at the other end to the one where the water will be pouring into... This will help keep the water circulating

The tray then fits over the box. I have squeezed the tray into the box, which helps it to stay in the right place

Now cut a hole in the top end of the tray so that you can connect a pipe where the water will come in.

This is just a small piece of pipe with a t-piece on one end and a 90-degree bend on the other...

I couldnt find a 90-degree bend so I have used a t-piece with a bung in one end

The t-piece you see here is there to spread the flow of water across the whole table
