Hello.

I just bought some security equipment. Now I would like to ask you to help me with advice how to connect it. This is the description from the sellers page:

Small choke for 400 Watts HPS light bulbs
This inductor, inserted before the ballast, prevents your electricity provider from identifying the ballast. This is because the inductor blocks the transmission of a measurable frequency range into the electricity mains.

and the picture (removed)

Now can you please tell me do I connect it on the phase( L-brown/black) wire or am I wrong?

Thank you for your help.

Not able to help on the wiring but can UK electricity companies actually do that?

I don’t know how to connect it but I hope you didn’t pay much because its not really necessary on a 400 imo :yinyang:

Yeah phase is live or brown / black. Not being funny tho electricity company won't know if you have ballasts unless you have 10+ and then they still won't know your using ballasts, they will just see a spike in electricity usage.

Thanks for quick answer. No I didn't pay much it just seemed a good idea for additional security. So are you sure it isn't necessary to connect it. I have "old" magnetic ballast.

Hope so. I'm not electrician but I read somewhere that ballasts emit some measurable units that can identify them. Hope I'm wrong. I don't want to start para. I had some security issue in the past and i want to be extra careful.

You'll be wanting some of this too for the protective headgear :-

What a brilliant scam. Someone buys a job lot of chokes and sells them at a profit to thereby self-identified cannabis growers.

Are you sure it wasn't the cops you bought it from ?

Well I assume that you are specialist from electrical area. Perhaps PhD? I can see that from your intellectual answer.

If I don't know something I ask. If I don't know the answer I don't insult.

I still think it's better safe than sorry. You should also ask yourself that and live by that.

It's bullshit.

I suspect you are the only one of thousands of growers who have passed through here who have considered fitting a choke in their mains supply.

The principal reason for small growers getting caught is (I believe) loose lips and/or making themselves a nuisance and thereby becoming of interest to the police.

The second reason must surely be not dealing with the smell.

Power companies aren't going to spend their time "listening" to "noise" on mains supplies - unless perhaps it was a large industrial unit doing real harm to neighbours' electronics.

The only known concern would be power factor issues with large installations, but I doubt a small choke would solve that issue - I suspect what you would actually need would be a flux capacitor :-

Thanks for the fair answer  . As I mentioned before I had some security issue and since than I'm security freak. I don't think 10 pounds is too much for saving me from trouble.

Peace.
