do you guys think it would be ok to change my light to a 600w in the middle of a grow as i have just got the ballast and now all i need is a bulb.will it freak the plants out or will they love it

not a problem, if plants were outside, the the hottest sunny days produce more grow, will need more feeding...

by all means do, but remember that a 600w hps will kick out a lot of heat, so make sure your ventilation is up to it and keep the light around 18 inches from the tops of the plants.
I tried upgrading from a 400w to a 600w digital, and found the temps skyrocketing into th 38-40 zone

So long as you have the ventilation capacity to cope with the additional heat output of the 600, I'd say go for it.

had my first grow in a plastic greenhouse and a hell of a job keeping the haet down with a 400w and a 200w flouro kept going up to 35/40 c not the 28c I wanted. In the box room now converted, same extractor bigger space and temp staying at 25/30c. So put in a 600w lamp and the 400w and temps got to a smooth 28c.
As to wether the plants like it I have problems there of a different nature.
