Interesting, if you look at the photo I posted, it clearly states "With added perlite", yet your photo is different.
Maybe they've improved the recipe?

I heard they have completely reformulated their MP + JI I hope its not an improvement like westlands made! :headpain:
Q. how do i make seeds?

A. You take a splinter off my cross, tie a few hairs to one end of it, dip the hairs into the pollen and lightly brush the pistils with it.

Oh man.... I rang every garden centre in my city to hunt this down, fashioned a trailer out of an old skateboard (I don't drive :(), and when that failed I tied the bag to my bike and walked nearly the whole frikkin' 4 miles home. lol
If anyone has the old safety data sheet, we could compare it with the new composition:
Peat, sterilised Loam, bark fines, composted green waste, limestone and nutrients including potassium Nitrate, sulphate of ammonia, mono ammonium phosphate and trace elements and a wetting agent (their grammar, not mine :))
PH5.5-6.0 (pretty low eh?)

E2A Also for comparison, here's the composition of the winner of the Which Best Buy Container Compost 2010 (and I think it may have won this year too?), New Horizon organic and peat free Multi-purpose, also made by William Sinclair:
Composted bark, timber residues, green waste, limestone and nutrients, including hoof and horn, rock phosphate, vinasse and blood meal.

Vinasse from wiki:
Vinasse is a byproduct of the sugar industry. [1] Sugarcane or Sugar beet is processed to produce crystalline sugar, pulp and molasses. The latter are further processed by fermentation to ethanol, ascorbic acid or other products. After the removal of the desired product (alcohol, ascorbic acid, etc.) the remaining material is called vinasse. Vinasse is sold after a partial dehydration and usually has a viscosity comparable to molasses. Commercially-offered vinasse comes either from sugar cane and is called cane-vinasse or from sugar beet and is called beet-vinasse.
Apparently it's high in fulvic acids....

Give a man a bud and he'll have bud for the day... Show him how to grow his own, and he'll have bud for about a week..

I got some 20l bags (JAB+JI) from morrisons. It says on the bags with added perlite. But I don't think there's any in there. How big would the perlite usually be? Bright white and visable? If so there's none in there. There looks to be some sand, but no perlite.
I've only had gold label special mix before, and that had a lot of what I assumed was perlite. Compared to that the JAB+JI has set with a very hard crust after watering. It didn't feel light and fluffy when repotting. It felt a lot more damp and compacted than the special mix. I can take a pic of what's in the bag if that'd help? Maybe King Arthur could post of pic of "the good stuff" for comparison?

Who on earth is King Arthur?
The perlite will be small, and a dull grey in colour. If your label says its there, its there.
I shall not miss it, but worry about the way this new mix will turn out. We'll see.

Just posting to thank Arnold,I've been screwing for days over what medium to use & then I found this beut of a thread.I've just paid £5.99 per 60ltr bag,I bought 2 and paid £8.99 delivery so £20.97 for 120ltrs I know that is alot but £8.99 delivery for that weight is cheap as chips so I am happy enough.

So thanks again Arnold,I can now go into my grow not worrying if I have picked the right dirt or not and just concentrate on keeping my tomatoes happy :)

adter reading this thread i got a bag of the one what says added perlite on it couple week ago from more reasons and my 2 week old cuttings seem to like it but they were started in an aero prop but should be fine for starting cuttings directly into this compost, just going to see how long the food lasts for the cuts but it seems a lot better than bnq multi, doesnt compact and is a nice dark texture and after sieve there was hardly any wastage except a few muddy stones i could be bothered to crumble up, happy so far, see how it goes.

I actually meant you ! For some reason while typing I thought your name was Arthur Layne ! It's a funny old game :)
While I did think there was a hard crust after watering. Either I was being odd and making things up again, or after a couple of waters through it seems to have improved. There's still a bit of a crust, but it's much lighter and thinner and what's underneath is much fluffier than when I first potted up.
I had my camera to hand, so here's a pic of it as it's come out of the bag. Penny added for scale. Is the perlite about the size of a grain of sand?

That looks nowt like the JAB+JI I've got, in which I can clearly see typical perlite bits
Don't know what to say, it seems that the new stuff is everywhere but up here lol
Just hope its as good.

But I cannot be sure it will be - so please folks, I am not yet recommending the new stuff. I've not even seen it yet, apart from here. So go carefully, and follow the KISS routine, watching your plants and making sure not to over water or over feed.

How long do the bags last if they're kept sealed in a dry cool shed ?

I take delivery of my bags today & if they're the old recipe then I'm thinking about ordering another 10 and storing it.
