Not ideal but not the end of the world either. I've put mine straight into 5L pots, which are very much on the small side for fully grown plants.

Having a pot that needs frequent watering is preferable to one that sits there and stagnates in its own stale moisture. This way your plant is often getting fresh water, old gasses get purged and fresh oxygen gets pulled in.
So if you can help it, start in a smaller pot. With autos people suggest starting in the final pot as the taproot on these strains is meant to determine the size of the plant (i.e. how deep it can go). In this case you would be better starting in a smaller degradeable pot that the roots can get through and then just sticking this into the final pot when things are kicking off.

That link is good - basically when roots start sticking out the bottom it is time to have a look and think about potting on.
