On the good side, at least the taproot won't hit anything on the way down. On the bad side, the little plant might spend all it's time making roots and little greenery. If you are growing an automatic with only 60 days until crop, that could be a problem, but if it isn't going to crop until Oct, then it's less of a problem and the greenery will catch up.

Not ideal but not the end of the world either. I've put mine straight into 5L pots, which are very much on the small side for fully grown plants.

More importantly it will take a seedling a very long time to use the water in a properly watered 11L pot. This can mean that the soil goes sour. It is preferable to pot up in increments starting with smaller pots. See this link for an idea of when to pot on.

Having a pot that needs frequent watering is preferable to one that sits there and stagnates in its own stale moisture. This way your plant is often getting fresh water, old gasses get purged and fresh oxygen gets pulled in.

So if you can help it, start in a smaller pot. With autos people suggest starting in the final pot as the taproot on these strains is meant to determine the size of the plant (i.e. how deep it can go). In this case you would be better starting in a smaller degradeable pot that the roots can get through and then just sticking this into the final pot when things are kicking off.

No, they love it. So long as you don't bash them about too much.

If you're using an extremely free draining medium (and not many are), such as the 511 mix as is popular amongst mainstream non-cannabis gardening circles over the pond, then after rooting in a 3" pot you can skip the potting up stages. However, I would not plant straight into such a large pot straight away anyhow.

Yep, good point. I don't use soil but clay balls, so can get away with a bigger pot and I underwater a little so the root goes down looking for moisture. If you are using 11L of compost you will get a soggy sour blob of earth with a little seedling sat on top. And you might waste a load of compost if the seed doesn't spout!

That link is good - basically when roots start sticking out the bottom it is time to have a look and think about potting on.
