sorry Ak

just to clarify your variac dial matey, yours is marked for running at 2 settings,
240w & 270w & as long as its wired for 240, you should count up in increments of 24,
ie 40% = 96, 50% = 120 etc etc ^ use something to mark the % settings.

nice one mate i've got the same variac as you cept i've got two for a low/high switching unit and you just saved me a massive thread about how i've found it an absolute bastard to get casings for these open variacs

what size nylon bolts did you use? i'm also having issues finding these in quantities less than 1000

i 2nd the motion to fit plug and socket.. makes things a lot easier and a little safer.. i'm using kettle plug inputs and hope to use 3 pin mains socket outputs.

on your variac there should be a (less shoddily drawn) diagram similar to my drawing, if you connect between N and input 1, and you wind the variac all the way round, you'll get 270v out, if you connect between inputs N and input 2 and wind it all the way up you'll get 240 out, because when the wiper is all the way round in this configuration, you're basically connecting your load directly between live and neutral
