No problem having the tap in the res or next to the pump.
I don't know about an anti syphon tube....when I've run this type of system, my res has been lower or at the same level as the plants and I've never used one.
Hopefully someone can explain a bit more.

Yeah I presumed I'd be ok if the res was on the floor next to them (which it was when I tested it). I may just add another dripper tube that folds into the top of the res so that air can get in the loop once the pumps stopped.

Now to work out how those bloody digital timers work!!! :-(
