The EC and pH will not tell you if your water is hard or not.
You need the levels of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate.
Have a look on your water company website....it will usually have a report on there of everything in your water supply. At the very least it will tell you if you have hard or soft water.

IT depends upon whether you have Hardwater or Softwater. PH and EC matter only when you find that out. I have soft where I live. Ask your supplier or do a quick google search for your area.

fai i thought that water harshness is measured in ppm so i was under the impression that if u put ur e.c meter into ur water it will give u a reading like coco grower has an his tap water reading is 0.4 this would tell me that he has a standard water myn gives a reading of zero out the tap this is softwater am i wrong in thinkin this?

Water hardness is measured in degrees Clarke....but you can express it in ppm also.
It is the sum of the molar concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions.
Your water may have a high EC...but the minerals making up that reading may not be Ca or Mg.

A zero EC reading is soft water, yes.........but you cannot make the assumption that because the EC is high that the water is hard. Usually a high EC will indicate hard water, but it is not always so.
As I said above....the water company website is the best place to start to confirm if you have hard/soft water.

Hope that makes sense.

Edit - 0.4EC is not that high tbh, mine varies between 0.6 and 0.8EC.

They cant give a definitive answer as to the hardness for my area as it switches between two supplies underground and open top reservoir

I do get a slight lime build up on my taps

Ive got a friend that lives 1 mile away and he doesnt even have to add ph down but i have to he gets a perfect 5.9 for coco

Peace
