Hi all, anyone used the KOBO ereader before? my son wants an e-reader for his birthday and the kobo is down to £59 at sainsbury's, sounds too good to be true so I'm suspicious but for that price if it's OK then I'll go for it... anyone have a view on the kobo?

I can't comment on the Kobo but MrsM got me a Kindle for my birthday and I'm loving it. I still like hard copies of reference books but I'm loving my Kindle for reading fiction and having a library of reference material I can carry in my bag.
The country is governed for the richest, for the corporations, the bankers, the land speculators, and for the exploiters of labor. The majority of mankind are working people. So long as their fair demands - the ownership and control of their livelihoods - are set at naught, we can have neither men’s rights nor women’s rights. The majority of mankind is ground down by industrial oppression in order that the small remnant may live in ease.

I *love* my Kindle - can't speak for the Kobo.

One thing people may say, to put you off the Kindle, is that it's "locked" to Amazon, which is a load of bollocks. eBooks from Amazon are protected, so can only be read on the Kindle, but the Kindle will happily display most common eBook formats (ePub, and .mobi) if you can manage to use Calibre software (it's free). Also, you can move eBooks bought from Amazon between 3 devices.

And Amazon have quite a few eBooks which are £0.00 ...

the Kindle is "tied" to an Amazon account ... that's how you get books onto it via Whispernet. If you have a problem with that, then don't get a Kindle. For myself, I already had an Amazon account (had one since 1997), and so it was not big deal. If you've already got an Amazon account, it's kinda a no brainer.

we went KOBO as they are down to £50 in ASDA, it seems to work fine in comparison with the kindle, the page turning buttons on the front rather than the sides like the kindle which my mrs thinks awkward although as a book reader only my thumb is already in the right position by default... when it breaks in 3 weeks I'll post an update lol

so far baz from what I can tell as a none user of this tech... it feels OK with a quilted back, he wanted black but they do 3 other colours, it has no 3G, the page refresh seems the same as the kindle and apparently the screen is the same as they fit in a kindle, wifi and cable only for transfer, supports EPUB, PDF and MOBI files, came with 100 books installed but there are 1,000,000 titles on the KOBO shop to choose from for free, I popped some more title on from my itunes folder of epubs with ease so he has some other stuff and I also deleted some of the freebies that were not suitable for a 10 year old, seemed easy... standard small usb connection for transfer and charging... all in all seemed OK for 50 notes to me... still yet to see how high the disappointment is that it isn't a kindle, but it's tough, thats what he got lol

he is lucky, it wasn't like that for me either by a long shot... I got a bloody coffeemaker at 11 for christmas, my mum got nothing though, I think they had run out when it came to getting me something... saying that when I was 10 I got a .410 shotgun, turned out it was just an excuse to get me out to replace the ageing lab and it wasn't long till he sold it on me but happy days all the same

Not sure if I'm misreading this, but if my 10th b-day present was to shoot the dog, then I'd be happy with a coffee machine at 11.

lol

not much you can do with a blind old lab, we used to have to wait until she was asleep as she could hear the locks being turned in the gun cabinet and would lie across the front door so we couldn't get out without her.. bless

I can just imagine your sibblings on their birthday "what the fuck mum and dad, an etch-sketch? distracted got to kill lassie" :)

btw I tried a kobo from a local library, much better than my memories of trying a kindle. But, saying that, I tried the kindle a while ago and I'd expect them to be much improved by now. Personally, I think there has to be quite a jump in the technology before I'd perfer reading ebooks to the real thing. Still, that's be discussed a couple of times on here already.
