Just put on some Pink Floyd on my pooter and it got me wondering what media players folks use.

I use Winamp for music and VLC Media Player for video, they seem to be the best I've found, Winamp sounds as good as or better than any other music media player I've tried, it's easy to use and it was the first one I used (after realising that the Windows Media Player is shit) so I'm kinda fond of it and VLC Media Player seems to play pretty much any video without having to bugger about with finding codecs, and the picture & sound quality seem to be as good as any I've tried (I sometimes use GOM Player, if I'm watching summat while connected to the internet and browsing, cos it is less resource hungry than VLC and I've got an old computer with fuck all RAM, sometimes VLC stutters if I'm online at the same time, but I'd rather use VLC when I'm just watching summat).

SO what are your media players of choice ? :)

Hope that maybe this thread will introduce some folks to better media players than the ones they use now :) (especially anyone using Windows Media Player, cos it really is bottom smearings, worse than pretty much every free media player I've ever used)

VLC and iTunes here. On a Mac so there aren't the same alternatives to iTunes as there are for pc, and its not quite the same irritating resource hog as it is on a pc anyway.
Oh yeah, and eyetv for terrestrial tv on the computer.

As far as I can see the only real difference between Winamp free and Winamp Pro is that Pro allows you to rip/burn Cds faster & better quality, but there are free apps that are far better at that anyway so seems like a waste of money to me. Dunno about other pay media players, to be honest Winamp free sounds plenty good enough to me, but I'm not really a muso and I've got shitty ancient speakers so I probably couldn't tell the difference anyway.

Was VLC for ages, had one too many files that wouldn't play correctly and moved to media player classic. http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/ haven't looked back.

Yip Winamp and VLC here too. Some of the shoutcast radio stations are worth using winamp for alone. Plus shoucast streams directly to the PS3. I did flirt with Media Monkey for a little while because it seems to be very customisable. But in terms of sound quality I couldn't hear much differnce so changed back to Winamp. I used Gomm player for a while too because the key and mouse bindings are quite handy. But VLC seems tro play almost every file type easily. WMP i don't really like at all for to many reasons to mention

I'm sick of windows media player, keep giving it another go but keep coming up against silly stuff it can't do :wallbash: toooo heavy man...

Do you know if you can rip CD's with Media Player Classic? In some lossless form hopefully WAV or FLAC? I'll be installing that if you can cause i've had enough of windows version now.

For vids i always use VLC :yep:

“There is no reason to accept the doctrines crafted to sustain power and privilege, or to believe that we are constrained by mysterious and unknown social laws. These are simply decisions made within institutions that are subject to human will and that must face the test of legitimacy. And if they do not meet the test, they can be replaced by other institutions that are more free and more just, as has happened often in the past.”
