In a predominantly white society calling someone black IS racist. If you don't see or understand that then I despair.

No it fucking isn't! Calling someone black is not racist in any society at all, ever. It is the colour of skin? it is a completely racist way of thinking to say that calling someone black is racism. I despair when people somehow see racism in describing the colour of someone's skin. How utterly ridiculous. So, would it be racist for someone to call me white if I happened to be in an African country at the time? How can identifying the colour of someone's skin be classed as racist?

e2a, unless of course you see having black skin as being a bad thing, in which case you are the epitome of ignorant racism.

Shouting out "Oi you black," or summat like that isn't exactly friendly though, and clearly must mean something.

It depends on the words before and after, and the way it was used too, to give it context.

Describing someone as black is OK.

"You're a fucking black bastard." Isn't. Both use the same word, but the latter, I think you'll agree, is meant as a racial insult.

Edited to correct grammar. And to add a point that I just thought of. And to say I hope I'm not being offensive, just trying to make a point.

Edited again cos there was a better way of saying what I mean.

Sorry. I do it all the time, think of ways to say stuff better after I've posted

Edited yet again to put an explanation on the end of my apology.

This is getting silly now. I need to stop drinking and go to bed. It's not gonna happenthough, I got enough for 2 more bottles od white cider :smug:

"You're black." (given that black is the accepted term for people of African ethnic origin) is probably OK.

"You're a fucking black bastard." Isn't. That both use the same word, but the latter, I think you'll agree, is meant as a racial insult.

it may be taken as a racist insult but to be honest calling someone a black bastard is just the same as calling them a bastard. The black bit is irrelevant as it is not a negative attribute and therefore should not be taken offensively. Its like calling someone an English bastard, or a "tall" bastard. It's the bastard bit that matters.

So assuming your white if my response to your views where shut up you white bastard the only bit you would find offensive is the bastard bit ? I certainly would be offended by both words which are powerful when put together in that sort of way

well, to be fair I wouldn't get offended, why would I care what someone I don't know says about me? If I were to be offended it would be the bastard bit that did it. Why would I take offence to being called white? I have long hair, in the past people have called me a "long haired wanker". If i were to take offence it would be because I was called a wanker, not because i have long hair, how is having long hair offensive?
