Morning all,

As an add-on to the Which trials kindly posted by OT1 here, I think it's useful to see what brands us mudlarks have been getting on with or having having trouble with in the last year. Certainly some brands that have previously been reliable for most peeps seem to have thrown up a lot of problems for others recently. I'm expecting some brands to have lots of postive and negative reports.

Poll is split into 4 questions and we are interested in the composts that you use for final flowering pots.

1) Garden Centre composts that you used in the last year and were happy with.
2) Garden Centre composts that you used in the last year and were not happy with.

All of the named brands are the regular peat based variety. If you are commenting on a peat free version please tick the peat free option and specify in the post which brand it was.

3) Growshop composts that you used in the last year and were happy with.
4) Growshop composts hat you used in the last year and were not happy with.

Happy voting folks.....

e2a- I've only used Westlands MP with added JI in the last year, and personally I've found it to be fine. But I bought 1/2 dozen bags from the same pallet last spring. I know others have had problems with it so this year I will probably try and find some JAB with added JI.

fe2a- Thanks for the 5 star rating ......I haven't rated my own thread...... ;)

Previously i've been using John Aurthur Bowers with JI with excellent results but could not get it for this grow so got this Westlands MP +JI, i'm very happy with the growth and vigour of the plants but have had a fungal problem and am convinced it was in the compost so i will not be using this again (Thank PM for essence!).
Next grow will be with JAB+JI if i can get it, if not i'm going for the Q&B MP + JI. :oldtoker:

e2a : Excellent thread Bluepixie, just what we need!

Bump.....come on lads and lasses, I'm sure there is more than 12 members who've completed a compost grow in the last year and can feedback on whether their compost choice was good or bad..... :P

Posted a similar poll last year and got nearly 200 votes.....

Agree with that, this is a great poll but will only work if enough people get involved. I'm going to add a link in my sig.

Westlands MP +JI here!

I still like it anyway. Interestingly the last two bags I've bought haven't contained the west+ (otherwise known as woody crap) :spliff:
I do get a bit of a fungal thing.... But that's the same as before I ever bought a bag of westlands!

It's a shame the 'no vote' choice throws off the percentage figures for the results, is there any way of being able to choose [no vote] but not having its % added to the calculations?

Though it's not too hard to see which ones are prefered by looking at the # of votes.

Cheers, Legalise

I've been using Erin multi-purpose with added John Innes.

Seems to contain a few woody/strawy bits, but I seived them out and put them on top of the pots as a mulch. The roots loved it, but plants needed feeding a little sooner than with Westlands MP + JI.

I'm about to try out New Horizon organic and Bulrush Gold plus MP + JI. I'll let you know once I have done a couple of plants in each.

B&Q MP great for Hesi/Formulex use right from seed. If you like that, very mild.

B&Q with JI very mild too, good for 2nd potting with HESI/Nute program.

JAB with JI, VERY strong. Adding in low doses, good for mature plants or heavy feeders like Kush that love a good strong mix early on.

Westlands Seedling, useless.

B&Q MP in the 70 litre bags is my choice of shoes for my ladies, In terms of value for money its brilliant, 3 bags for a tenner or a couple of coppers short of 4 quid each, The plants respond well to it, And with it being b&q its a quick jaunt down the road come restocking time, Only downside is that theres a fair amount of twigs and bits of roots in there you gotta remove but all that said it's a good compost.

I personally steer clear of homebase JI2 these days, I find it compacts too much losing its crumbly texture and turning to concrete after a couple waterings stunting the plants. (used to be much better)

I couldn't comment on other brands of compost as it's been nearly 2 years since I used anything other than b&q mp and hb JI for potting on
