does any one else trawl secondhand shops,charity shops for vinyl,I do,I spend to much money on records,or so she tells me I have cd's but you just cant beat the sound of the needle hitting the record...can you ?

i'd love the space to be able to save all that music from a landfill or being turned into retro fruit bowls and ashtrays.

i've got a couple of boxes worth but it's not a great collection

and my ma in law has 2 crates of 50's vinyl ,she's had them on freecycle & they're not exactly my taste , but if there's no takers by summer i'll stash 'em anyway.

I have my teens into my late 20's represented in vinyl.
I danced and bought records heard places like quadrant park, jenks bar,Wigan pier,angels in burnley,bowlers on Trafford park then later influences from djs like Sven vath and deep melodic but pumping tunage.
I love my vinyl,and too regularly search through charity shop piles.i've bought a lot of good stuff in oxfam and I I was so regular the guy kept a donated record player for me to flick through em with.
I can imagine mothers cleaning out 30 something's old bedrooms and donating.....

I got a tune "back by dope demand" in a charity shop.i was buzzing for ages off finding that!!!

Im sure I read somewhere on t'internet recently ,that vinyl was better audio quality than 320bps format or FLAC ..which surprised me for about 1 second and then it was just obvious, DJ's dont play digital music do they?

I'm no expert but I think vinyl is uncompressed and assuming you have a decent needle + speakers then the sound you get will piss all over a CD or iPod.

When we move house and I have some space, my first purchase will be a turn table, some decent speakers, a decent needle and The Wall and Dark Side on heavy vinyl. Then ill sit back, get completely battered and listen to them for a few days non stop.

It's very very very subjective Lake many audiophiles will say they prefer vinyl whilst many will prefer cd. But for me I would say both formats have advantages and disadvantages records give a more lively warmer feel but since you want the recording to sound as close to the original this could be seen as a weak link as the player is coloring the sound. Many arguments for vinyl fall apart in some regards when you think about it, most think analogue is the bee's knee's but since most studio's are digital now it's getting changed from digital to analogue to go on vinyl so it was never analogue to begin with.
Cd's some would say have never been allowed to reach their full potential (I agree with this) many feel that cd is too clinical sounding and doesn't have the same depth as vinyl but I think that could be because it hasn't had the 100 plus years that vinyl had to get perfected although I do think certain cd's sound better than their vinyl counterparts and vice versa.
If you have a good DAC decoding your cd's I see no reason for them not being as good as or better than vinyl but a good DAC doesn't add in all the nostalgia or warmth you get from vinyl.

The compression isn't a issue for me I can't hear the difference between a flac or a 320kb mp3 but flac will take up 3 or 4 times the space although I do have some flacs.
I think it mostly comes down to the recording engineers some are good some are bad some music was recorded on analogue equipment and meant to be heard on it. Mainly for me though some stuff is just adjusted all wrong by bad sound engineers. Money by pink floyd is supposed to be the best example of how it should be done.

It all comes down to your own ears and what you think tbh but if you did the maths number crunching etc and got a scientific opinion they would go with digital or cd because there is less added/lost by the equipment so the representation of the sound should be closer to perfect.
