Hi and good day fellow uk420 hope all is well just wanted to mention some thing
about surface Retention of soil with the plant magic range..

Think thats what you call it's kind of where if you where to pour say some water
ontop of the soil it just sit's there until the water retention is broke which then
allows water to pass through the rest of the layers..

Thats only way i can think of explain this,I find with the plant magic soil
it seams to dry very quickly and also with the problem i mentioned above with
the surface retention issue..

Has any one else has issue like this and how do you combat it im not sure if
its me or some thing im doing temps are fine i water allot more than i do with
any other soil maybe 2-4 times a week and then a feed inbetween.

I also use auto pots i love all the range that the plant magic guys create
all have played massive rolls in my success just cant get away with the
soil..

I wanted to just put this up as to see if others think the plant magic soil
has issue with water retention like breaking the film on the surface.

The reason for my post was to put my $2 into this as i and a few others
who used the soil recommended that it was drying out very quickly..

I dunno is this not beneficiary to the plant to get more watering and
feed cycles..???

I chose to go with another brand to try with the plant magic range
and compliments it really well with out the over drying issue i
was having..

Maybe i just got an old batch from the grw shop :-)

Will try again next time with the plant magic soil..

Any ways enough rambling from me..

Thanks

n00b

And keep up the good work guys making a huge difference in the growing
scene..

I use a fine rose, Haws stylee and let it pool around the stem and then come back to it on my watering round or wait a few seconds for it to soak into the compost. This way you avoid water spilling/pouring over the edge of the rootball and build up to soaking it evenly. Nice an easy, no rush. :smokin:

It seems you could be leaving them too long until watering as i've not seen this.

I think there are a few factors maybe need to get a rose head so its like a sprinkle
and also stand in water to water from the ground up also..

And stab the surface with a bbq thingy the thing is as mentioned above watering to little
seams i was constantly watering them i think also my autopot thingys with the holes in
didn't help..

Will give it another try next time i just couldn't understand why it only did it with
pm soil and not other brands in the exact same conditions..

A friend said put some pebbles ontop to stop evaporation but like to keep the humidity
up oh and forgot to mention my root ball was so big that maybe it was a cause of my
problems i have never saw a root ball like it before..

So twisted and intertwined i was laughing as i was trying to pull the stem out of the soil
its definitely good gear but wanted to iron that issue out before i use it again especially
with the pots im using water goes every where combated this with a charity bag and wrapped
it round :).

I get the same ting you mention when watering, Ive just started to add a touch of Bio Wetter as this breaks the surface tension of the water and allows it to sink in with ease. I think youre pots are drying quicker due to the airy nature of the soil.

iive had that with pm soil that I let dry out completely in the bag. Solution in my case was to bottom water for the first few waterings. And then just follow a normal wet/dry routine.

+1 for Rubadubdub, I use pm soil also. Its all about watering slowly. Let the roots soak it up & you could add a little soil to the top and water in aswell.

Hey I Find the opposite i think the pm Compo saturates them better than others i have tried,The only time i find it doesnt saturate properly isif you leave it to long btween waterings and thecompo drys out a lil tooo much also since i changed to haws watering can and fine rose the sat+uration is 10x better than b4.

What he said...seriously it's the best compost I have used and I love the way it wets. I am in normal 6ltr pots and I tend to water every third day and they get 2ltrs each which gives just a little run off.

Have to agree with every one who commented above i think the soil is absolute great thats why i wanted
to get my issue sorted to start using the PM soil the growth of the Pm range is absolute crazy..

The growth in veg is very quick especially using the granules and potting up correctly..I think also when i
water mine i have maybe 4 ltrs of water in the bottom plastic thingy and the plant will happily drink the
whole thing dry..

As another problem i think i might have let them over dry in the first place which won't help but
then i would have had to water every day if that was the case.Which confuses me more..

And another thing i made a n00b mistake when building the auto pot and had the holes at the top
so water would just run off built them properly this time not stoned ROFL..

But my reason for this post was because i want to go back to using the PM soil far more
supreme quality even the has bits of shit in it not with pm very fine and nice
i will just try again next time and im going to get some bio wetter one of the things
i forgot to get from the range..

But also wanted to add about the root mass was just incredible i couldn't break it up
it was like a (DUNO)never saw out like it before in my life keep up the good work guys.

Thanks

Since lining my pots with 6mm capillary matting my average wet/dry cycle between all the plants is the same so none of them dry out to quick and cause the problems you mention..

I think water retention is the wrong term, it's more water rejection in that the medium becomes hydrophobic - it sheds water.

I agree that PM supreme is far less hydrophobic than most compost out there, the fytocell and yucca extract helps I think. Batmix especially can get very bad sometimes.

Use some wetting agent and also use mycorrhizal inocculant product as this helps the plants cope with drought conditions better by protecting the roots. The fungal webs around the roots help retain and absorb moisture.
