Alright guys & gals.

Heres some pics of a veg cabinet i put together recently for less than £40
& thought i'd share them as it might give other folk ideas .

right, i started of with a kitchen base carcase, kindly donated from a neigbours skip, or FREE
i also salvaged 4 doors & 4 drawers, (just in case i made an arse of it) & a good bit of worktop.

so this is what i started off with



it measures 1000mm wide, 600mm deep & 750mm high.



here i started to strip it down & taking the drawers apart as i just wanted the front facing bits.




heres the bottom of the base,
the previous owner had snapped the feet off & knackered the screw in holes




then i had a brain wave or something & thought about fitting casters to make it easy to move the
cabinet about, i managed to find an ideal set of 4 lockable rubber feet casters from fleabay for about £13.
BNQ were wanting £12 a piece, the robbin bastarges

i then got a length of 4" x 2" wood & cut it to size for 2 straps & screwed them to the base from
inside & screwed the casters to the straps, a doddle to do, even for a diy noob like me




heres the back of the unit,
its a sheet of thin plyboard, held by 1 strap of wood & grooves at the base & sides.
(thisll be strengthend up a bit with 25mmx18mm wood straps all around & copious amounts of no nails)




here i used some 18mmx18mm wood as a light blocker inside the doors & around the drawers,
i left a gap of 2 to 3mm around the doors im using white draft excluder to seal things,
the drawers surround was fitted flush as theyre going to be screwed on inside & sealed
again with no nails.



dont do what i did & pull the unit about by the doors, the door only came of by the hinges,
knackering the holes, a pal suggested using bolts but i wanted it to try & be as inconspicuous as possible,
so i fitted a bit of 30mmx 10mm strap to the damaged side & screwed the doors back on.
but i ended up with doors looking like this



i also screwed 2 bits of grooved wood straps to each side near the top, im going to use 1 length of
wood to slot into the grooved straps & once the light is attached to the hooks, itll act as a light mover.


heres the cab after a few coats of white matt.

part 2

heres the plan

1 2x55w PL2 silverwing prop light (philips cool white bulbs 4800k x 2 ) &
1 5" Rvk fan with matching 5" stubby CF with 3 passive intakes.


here ive cut out the holes at the back & will fit plastic air vent covers inside facing down to help any light leaks.
i also strengthend the back board with wood batons so i could screw the vents to them without the vents falling off
& i painted the back a matt black.






this is the back before i painted it, ive still to get another 3 vent covers,
these were just to check on how it looked, ill point them upwards to help block the light leak at the back.




this is the bit of worktop i liberated, gave it a good clean, cut it to size, cut a 5" hole for the ducting
& gave it a few coats of white matt on the bottom,the sides & back edgeing. the side & back edgeing
was just to tidy the units look up a bit.




this is what i used to screw the drawers back on (dont know what theyre called) & sealed with no nails.




heres the ducting & CF being fitted, the ducting fitted great but i also used the old trusty gaffer tape around the hole
to seal any smells in. i used 4 screw in hooks & 2 60cm bungee cords to hold the CF in place vibration free.
i also used a few cable ties to hold the bungees together, if the CF fell, it would wipe everything out, its really heavy .





heres the 5" fan connected up, just need to come up with a plan to hide the fan better,
im considering using Leepys method (box filled with expanding foam) using an empty box just now
& the noise is quite loud & noticable, im going to try a plug light dimmer first but if this doeant work,
ill go the variac way to sort the fan noise out with

Part 3

heres the cab with the light fitted, i used 2 - 1.1/2" screw in hooks to hold the 2 yoyos.

i fitted some draft excluder around the inside door frame to create a good seal & light blocker
(and it nearly works too ill just have to fuck around a bit to get it right & tight),
ive also used some door magnets to keep things tight & secure, 4 on each door & they work a treat.






here, you really notice the light leaks, the back leak has been temporarily fixed with some black & white
stretched across the back & held with white gaffer tape, you hardly notice the tape from the sides
i also left about 9"s B&W trailling on the floor tucked under the unit, it works a treat, no light leak.
the next plan is to use something better than the black & white sheeting, ive got some 10mm hardboard
which should do the job nicely, just need to try & keep a steady hand with that bloody jigsaw
(the things got a mind of its own or it that only when i use it )

as the cab is still a work in progress upto now, it works a treat,
ive got 6 of whazzups Annesthesias & 6 mazars in it just now,theyde also were really starting to stink
the few days before i got them into it, i could smell it as soon as i walked in the door






ill get the other 3 airvents in the next few days & when im fitting them, im going to try out
makeing a bug catcher, its some mesh netting with 1mm holes, im going to double it up a few times
& screw the airvents to it, sealing them with the obligatory no nails

almost forgot


i used white floor secure on the cab floor, just in case theres ever a spill,
i just used some double sided tape for vinyl tiles, strong as hell. think it cost £ 3 from B&Q.


the totals so far is
4" x 2" x 6ft £2
8 pack of 18mm x 18mm £10
4 castors £13
2 tubes of no more nails £6
white gaffer tape £4
mesh net £1
screws £4
double sided tape £3
B&W £1

£44 ok just over the £40 mark

not bad for a few weeks worth work, eh leepy

Top job mate that looks good

I have seen people mount the doors and drawer-fronts to a seperate board and then hinge the whole thing, in effect creating a false front which gives you a bit more height accessible inside the cab, but if yours works like that it is all good

Love that veg cab very smart!
To stealth that fan could you get an old tv that doesnt work, open it up rip the guts out, cut a hole in the bottom and place over the fan the old school TV's have vents in them at the top so it would slowly push the air out through the vents. I reckon a 28" would do the job, you could pack it with foam inside to keep the noise down.

Cheap as chips, and works a dream!!

Just wondering where you got those sweet little vent covers? i'm going to try a passive intake for my next grow but i need a decent light baffle that won't look to sketchy, I was thinking of houseing the baffle on the inside, but unsure what cover i could get that wouldn't look to bad!?

Nice thread mate love the DIY, it's the reason i started growing........ Just to keep (trying) to build grow drobes . Probably go with a tent next

Exactly like mine mate. I am looking to veg 9 plants before main tent and also keep a mother or two if room allows.

How are you watering them in the cubes as i want to do exactly the same and not getting much info. I will also be using it to root cuttings as well.
