No but I bought some weed in Kerala last year which is the state on the mainland directly north of Sri Lanka. More likely to see weed than hash I'd imagine, pure peppermint sativas compressed into little bricks is all i saw, it's very good stuff, I've still got about 5g stashed under a rock near Munnar

Been there; on arrival at passport control there is a huge sign that says 'Possession of drugs carries the death sentence'. Glad I didn't take any, cos if I had been carrying I would have shat myself.
I really loved my time there and have never eaten so much. A great place to go for a break from smoking.

I have never been to Sri Lanka, so this is purely a guess - but from what I know of South India (.e.g Tamil Nadu and Kerala) I would think that ganja would be pretty commonplace in all areas of the island
a quick google and I found this article... (Colombo is the capital)

I haven't been to a party in Colombo with late-teens or twentysomethings which didn't have someone lighting up Ganja. Even if you are caught using or carrying moderate amounts of ganja, you can pay the market-price for the bribe in most occasions (unless you really F up). Same goes for most other victimless crimes like prostitution. If you want the service, you can get it.
I would have thought the sign you saw at passport control referred to the penalty for bringing 'drugs' into the country --- not to just being caught with it within the country
a quick google, there is this article
School boys with ganja cigarettes
http://www.lankanews...005/8/2995.html
8 August 2005
Colombo Fort Magistrate Sarath C Karunaratne granted bail in Rs. 2500 each to two students who had ganja cigarettes in their possession.
The two students are from a leading school and aged 15 years, were produced before th magistrate by the Slave Island police.
The magistrate warned the students not to waste their time and get their future destroyed.
Thereafter he called the parents to come forward in court and warned them to find out where their children had frequented, what they did and with whom they associated. He advised the parents to be to pay more attention to their children .
The magistrate questioned the students how they had obtained the ganga cigarettes and they told him that they had gone to Steuart Place in a three wheeler and obtained it.
The Slave Island police appeared for the prosecution.
my expectation, for what it's worth, is the worst you would be looking at getting caught with a tola or two is having to pay a bribe

No problem getting drugs over there...good ones and naughty ones
“There is no reason to accept the doctrines crafted to sustain power and privilege, or to believe that we are constrained by mysterious and unknown social laws. These are simply decisions made within institutions that are subject to human will and that must face the test of legitimacy. And if they do not meet the test, they can be replaced by other institutions that are more free and more just, as has happened often in the past.”

Yep been there many times, smoked weed every time. Defo dont try to bring any with you, as trafficing can carry the death penalty. Dont expect to come across any decent bud in sri lanka, 9 times out of 10 the weed will mostly be stalk, leaf and seeds, LOADS of seeds
I happen to find the weed does actually get me stoned in a way, but nothing like back here in the uk. Sometimes you can score some Kerula Bud (they call it KG for kerula Ganja), but ive never been impressed by any of it tbh
About 3 years ago, I was at a party in Mambos, Hikkaduwa, and smelled REAL UK CHEESE being smoked!! My nose pricked up and I went on hunt mode, but never found it.
The german tourists always seem to be in regular supply of good hash, but these days you pay thru the nose for anything to smoke in sri lanka. 3 years ago I was getting 50grms shitty weed for roughly 7 quid, this year sum people were trying to charge 25 quid for 20grms (bearing in mind most of that weight is not smokable).
My advice is to only buy off people you have known for a few days. the police are corrupt as fuck over there, and more often are looking to bribe you more than arrest you. Id say you can normally pay your way out of petty trouble over there, but it's best not to get caught in the first place.
Also bear in mind that when i was in sri lanka this year, my local friends were telling me that some guys over there will now sell you weed, then go to the police and tell them that you have some weed, then the police will bust you, get some money out of you, and then give half of that money to the guy you scored off, and put the other half in their pockets!!
Anyway, you're question was about weed, so there you go, but theres so much more to Sri lanka than it's shit weed!! Amazing country, awesome food, beautiful people!! Climb Adams Peak while you're there!!!
Peace and love!

the info below is copied from a cannabis travel website
columbo - sri lanka
Smoking tolerance level [1= very illegal 5=virtually legal]: 4
Legislation: Marijuana is illegal in Sri Lanka, and so is any related activity. Recently the government has launched a campaign against drugs.
Marijuana, although used in local ayuvredic medicine, is taboo. Smoking in public will get you into trouble.
Law Enforcement: Due to very high security measures in Colombo (related to recent escalation of Tamil Tigers problems) people seem to be quite cautious when selling.
Especially by night, you can expect to meet police patrols which will search your vehicle literally every few hundred meters.
Police and military do not harass foreigners but it is highly recommended not to smoke in the car nor create any suspicion.
Where to buy marijuana in Colombo, Sri Lanka: As of November 2006, there were several \"Hotel (de) Pillawoods\" restaurants in Colombo - the place which was pointed out here to be selling. Unfortunately, as a foreigner, all I could get there was suspicion.
Most of the Tuktuk drivers will have some or will be able to provide some info - check the ones which linger by their vehicle (eg. near Mt Lavinia, Odel, Cres-cat).
Significantly better quality I have found at the clubs - ask the "promising" looking guys/bodyguards/ticket sellers from the entrance and they will direct you (eg. R&B club).
For hashish you have to try the latter option. It did not seem safe to meet these people the next day so I have no info on the quality of the hash.
Marijuana Prices in Colombo, Sri Lanka :
200 - 250 Rs for a small bag bought using directions/direct selling of Tuktuk drivers.
> 300 Rs for the same quantity - significantly better, bought from
> karaoke/clubs
More information: It is said that good things are available also on the beaches down south - eg. Bentota beach. Just walk out to the sea, look interested and very probably you will be approached by some offerers. Also, out of Colombo there is less police so you might feel safer!
